MELBOURNE - Feb 14/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high over Tasmania and the western Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A weak upper low over far southwestern Queensland will move east over southern Queensland. A surface trough lies over the west of the state, while another weak surface trough lies just off the central and southern coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and western districts, tending more scattered over the northwest and also about the southwest where some locally moderate to heavy falls are possible. Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland areas, more scattered about central and northeast tropical coasts. Thunderstorms will tend to patchy light rain overnight in the southern inland. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics and through the interior. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and central interior, tending scattered over the west. Scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms about the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Cooktown, with some local moderate falls possible about the North Tropical Coast and Central Coast. Mostly fine over the southeast interior with just isolated showers and possible thunderstorms. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics and through the interior. Forecast for Saturday The high over Tasmania will move only slowly eastwards into the Tasman Sea. The upper trough in the southern Tasman Sea will develop into a closed upper low and move westward towards the central New South Wales coast, while the northern extension into southern Queensland will move east towards the southeast corner of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics in a moist and unstable environment. Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms will continue about the east coast in the moist onshore flow. Fine in the southern interior and southwest with only isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere in the state. Forecast for Sunday The high in the southern Tasman Sea will continue to move slowly east as the upper low moves onto the central New South Wales coast. Isolated showers about the east coast will tend more scattered with possible thunderstorms about the central and tropical coasts. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue in the tropics and extend into the northwest of the state with showers and storms becoming more isolated in the west. Fine conditions will prevail in most parts of the central and southern interior. Forecast for Monday The upper low south of the border will track westwards into the central interior of New South Wales, while an upper trough extending to the north will rotate eastwards through the central and tropical inland of Queensland. This should lead to scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms over much of the tropics, although tending more isolated over the central and southern interior due to a dryer airmass in place. A surface trough in the Coral Sea will move west onto the southeast coast increasing showers and possible thunderstorms in the southeast. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere along the east coast, though tending scattered with isolated thunderstorms in the northern tropics. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Weather in the state on will greatly depend on the movement of the upper low. At this stage the most likely scenario is that the upper trough will swing to the northeast on Tuesday, maintaining showers and thunderstorms along the eastern districts and decreasing activity in the west. A surface low might form in the southern Coral Sea in response to the upper low, although it is likely to be too far offshore to have a direct impact on Queensland's weather. It is likely that an easing trend in the weather along the east coast will develop from Wednesday onwards. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
