MELBOURNE - Feb 13/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Bowen and Gladstone. Flood Warnings are current for the Moonie and Weir Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak surface trough occurs over western Coral Sea and is moving northwestward along the central coast. A high over southeastern Australia will maintain a ridge along the east coast of Queensland for the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Mostly cloudy over western districts with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Gulf district and Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers about the central east coast, more isolated further north. Isolated showers over the southeast region, increasing towards the southeast coast. Fine over the central interior of the state. A moderate to high fire danger over the interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics, moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast, fresh to strong on the central east coast. Light to moderate NE to SE winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday An upper level trough occurs over southern Queensland while a surface ridge of higher pressure persists about the east coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over western districts, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the tropics. Isolated afternoon showers generally over eastern inland districts. Some isolated showers over the southern interior otherwise fine through the central interior of the state. Showers about the east coast generally, increasing about central and northeast tropical coasts with possible isolated thunderstorm cells inland. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics and through the interior. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast. A moderate to high fire danger over the eastern interior and eastern coastal districts. Forecast for Friday The upper trough develops further over southern Queensland with little change in overall weather across the state. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over western Queensland and through most of the tropics. Instability actually increases over the interior and the southeast of the state leading to isolated showers and thunderstorms developing towards the southeast over eastern inland districts. The fine area over the central interior now contracts to the southern interior. Showers persisting about the east coast, more frequent on the central and northeast tropical coasts. Forecast for Saturday The upper trough now swings northeast over the west of the state and this actually clears the weather over southern Queensland. Thunderstorm activity decreases in the northwest but remains persistent over the remainder of the tropics. Reduced isolated afternoon shower activity now north of about Longreach and east of about Dalby. Showers continuing about the east coast, more frequent north of about St Lawrence. Forecast for Sunday An upper level low develops off the northeast coast of N.S.W and drifts inland to the northwest. Over Queensland little change in the overall weather with showers and thunderstorms in the northwest and remaining tropics. Isolated afternoon showers over the northern half of the interior and eastern interior. Showers persisting about the east coast. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The upper low south of the border tracks west on Monday with the associated trough over Queensland moving east. This will develop showers and thunderstorms generally over the eastern interior while increase the thunderstorm activity in the northwest of the state. Meanwhile showers increase along the southeast coast, little change elsewhere. By Tuesday the upper level trough eventually reaches the southeast of the state with thunderstorms over the southeast interior and increasing showers near the southeast coast. By Wednesday the upper level trough has passed through the southeast with reduced shower activity. Fine over the interior. Thunderstorms and showers through the tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
