MELBOURNE - Feb 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Mackay and Gladstone. Flood Warnings are current for the Balonne River and the Lower Weir River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough in the western Coral Sea is moving westwards and is expected to approach the central Queensland coast late this evening. A high in the Great Australian Bight will begin to strengthen a ridge along the east coast of Queensland during Wednesday. Another surface trough is slow moving over western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northwest and west of the state with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy with thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across the Peninsula district. Generally isolated showers along remaining parts of the east coast, tending scattered about the central and tropical coasts. Isolated showers over the southeast, tending scattered with possible isolated thunderstorms over inland parts. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms across the southern interior. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected once again through the northwest of the state with some moderate falls possible. Isolated showers and thunderstorms with some patchy rain will occur across most remaining western districts. Scattered showers with possible isolated thunderstorms will develop along much of the east coast and about adjacent inland areas south of Cooktown. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over most remaining northern districts. Isolated showers are expected over the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast. Forecast for Thursday An upper trough moving across South Australia will approach southwestern Queensland during the day. The high in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly eastwards towards Tasmania while maintaining a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Generally scattered showers and thunderstorms with patchy rain will occur about the northwest and west of the state. Isolated showers along the east coast and about adjacent inland areas, tending scattered with possible isolated thunderstorms north of about Mackay. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur over most remaining northern districts. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The upper trough will continue to move slowly eastwards and extend across much of southwestern and southern Queensland. The high will move slowly eastwards across Tasmania and into the Tasman Sea while maintaining a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to occur about the northwest and west of the state. Scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected along the east coast and about adjacent inland areas between about Rockhampton and Cooktown. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur across the remainder of the tropics. Generally isolated showers and possible thunderstorms elsewhere, mainly over inland parts. Forecast for Saturday The upper trough will become slow moving and should continue to extend across southwestern and southern Queensland. The high will move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea while maintaining the ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to occur about the northwest and west of the state with some moderate falls possible. Scattered showers with possible isolated thunderstorms will extend along most of the east coast and adjacent inland areas south of about Cooktown. Generally isolated showers and possible thunderstorms elsewhere. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The upper trough extending across southern Queensland should gradually begin to move across northern and eastern districts into early next week. The movement and development of this upper trough will ultimately dictate the level of showers and thunderstorms that are experienced across the state. The high should continue to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand while maintaining the ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough will move across central Australia on Sunday and may enter far southwest Queensland early next week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should occur over most western and northwest districts. Isolated to scattered showers should occur over much of the remainder of the state with possible isolated thunderstorms. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
