MELBOURNE - Feb 11/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Condamine and Balonne Rivers, the Lower Weir River and the Moonie River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high near the north island of New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A new high in the Great Australian Bight will remain slow moving during today. An upper level trough will intensify over the Great Australian Bight during today. A surface trough over the central Coral Sea will move slowly northwest during today. Forecast for the rest of Monday Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms about the northwest of the state with at least moderate falls, particularly with thunderstorms. Isolated showers along the east coast north of about St Lawrence, tending scattered with possible thunderstorms between Mackay and Cairns. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over remaining northern parts of the state. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms through the western, central west and southern and southeast interior, tending scattered in areas northwest of Charleville. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere, apart from some late isolated showers developing along the southeast coast. A Very High fire danger in parts of the Channel Country. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast. Forecast for Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected once again over the northwest of the state with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy with thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur across the Peninsula district. Isolated showers are expected along the remaining east coast, increasing to scattered about the central and tropical coasts and adjacent ranges with possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly inland. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast interior and are expected to become scattered during the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms. This activity should remain mostly inland, though may affect the Gold Coast and western or southern suburbs of Brisbane at some stage during the afternoon or evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across most remaining western districts and across the southern interior, with patchy light rain over the far southwest of the state. Strong winds may also develop offshore of the central coast in the evening. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast and also over the far southwest of the state during the morning. Forecast for Wednesday The upper trough over the Great Australian Bight will move east over South Australia while a surface trough will remain slow moving near the southwest border. Cloudy conditions will therefore persist through western Queensland, with patchy light rain and isolated thunderstorms south and west of about Longreach, thunderstorms tending more scattered through the far northwest of the state with some moderate falls continuing. Conditions should stabilise through the southeast as the upper trough moves away into the Coral Sea. Scattered showers will extend north along the southern coast however as a high moving east over southeastern Australia extends a firm ridge along the southern Queensland coast. Isolated showers will occur over remaining eastern districts, scattered near the tropical coast south of Cairns and through the far northern Peninsula with isolated thunderstorms. Forecast for Thursday The upper trough should approach southwestern Queensland leading to scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and patchy rain about western districts. The high should continue to move slowly eastwards to lie near Tasmania late in the day with a ridge extending further along the east coast of Queensland. A fresh SE onshore wind flow should lead to isolated to scattered showers about the east coast, extending inland to adjacent eastern districts during the day. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur over the northern tropics and Gulf Country. Fine and partly cloudy conditions are expected elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The high will move slowly east into the Tasman Sea while maintaining a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The upper trough is expected to move slowly east while gradually approaching southwest Queensland. Patchy rain areas, scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur over most western and northwestern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across the tropics, with showers tending scattered along the east coast north of about Cardwell. Isolated showers should occur with possible thunderstorms along the remainder of the east coast and about adjacent inland areas, with showers tending scattered about the southeast coast. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high should continue to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea while extending a ridge along the east coast of Queensland during the outlook period. The upper trough is expected to continue to move slowly east across far southern Queensland A weak surface trough should otherwise remain slow moving near the southwest Queensland border. Patchy rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms should occur over most western and northwest districts. Isolated to scattered showers should occur over much of the remainder of the state with possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly about the ranges. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
