Weather Situation
A high near the north island of New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along
the east coast of Queensland. A new high in the Great Australian Bight will
remain slow moving during today. An upper level trough will intensify over the
Great Australian Bight during today. A surface trough over the central Coral Sea
will move slowly northwest during today.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms about the northwest of the state
with at least moderate falls, particularly with thunderstorms. Isolated showers
along the east coast north of about St Lawrence, tending scattered with possible
thunderstorms between Mackay and Cairns. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over
remaining northern parts of the state. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms
through the western, central west and southern and southeast interior, tending
scattered in areas northwest of Charleville. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere,
apart from some late isolated showers developing along the southeast coast. A
Very High fire danger in parts of the Channel Country. Light to moderate SE to
NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected once again over the
northwest of the state with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy with
thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur across
the Peninsula district. Isolated showers are expected along the remaining east
coast, increasing to scattered about the central and tropical coasts and
adjacent ranges with possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly inland.
Isolated showers will occur over the southeast interior and are expected to
become scattered during the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms. This activity
should remain mostly inland, though may affect the Gold Coast and western or
southern suburbs of Brisbane at some stage during the afternoon or evening.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across most remaining western
districts and across the southern interior, with patchy light rain over the far
southwest of the state. Strong winds may also develop offshore of the central
coast in the evening. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Central
Highlands and Coalfields and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east coast and also
over the far southwest of the state during the morning.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough over the Great Australian Bight will move east over South
Australia while a surface trough will remain slow moving near the southwest
border. Cloudy conditions will therefore persist through western Queensland,
with patchy light rain and isolated thunderstorms south and west of about
Longreach, thunderstorms tending more scattered through the far northwest of the
state with some moderate falls continuing. Conditions should stabilise through
the southeast as the upper trough moves away into the Coral Sea. Scattered
showers will extend north along the southern coast however as a high moving east
over southeastern Australia extends a firm ridge along the southern Queensland
coast. Isolated showers will occur over remaining eastern districts, scattered
near the tropical coast south of Cairns and through the far northern Peninsula
with isolated thunderstorms.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough should approach southwestern Queensland leading to scattered
showers, isolated thunderstorms and patchy rain about western districts. The
high should continue to move slowly eastwards to lie near Tasmania late in the
day with a ridge extending further along the east coast of Queensland. A fresh
SE onshore wind flow should lead to isolated to scattered showers about the east
coast, extending inland to adjacent eastern districts during the day. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur over the northern tropics and Gulf
Country. Fine and partly cloudy conditions are expected elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The high will move slowly east into the Tasman Sea while maintaining a ridge
along the east coast of Queensland. The upper trough is expected to move slowly
east while gradually approaching southwest Queensland. Patchy rain areas,
scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur over most western and
northwestern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across
the tropics, with showers tending scattered along the east coast north of about
Cardwell. Isolated showers should occur with possible thunderstorms along the
remainder of the east coast and about adjacent inland areas, with showers
tending scattered about the southeast coast.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high should continue to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea while
extending a ridge along the east coast of Queensland during the outlook period.
The upper trough is expected to continue to move slowly east across far southern
Queensland A weak surface trough should otherwise remain slow moving near the
southwest Queensland border. Patchy rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms
should occur over most western and northwest districts. Isolated to scattered
showers should occur over much of the remainder of the state with possible
isolated thunderstorms, particularly about the ranges.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
