Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 8/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for the Condamine and Balonne
Rivers, the Lower Weir River and the Moonie River.
A Fire Weather Warning is current for southern parts of the Channel Country
district.

Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. A weak surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state. A
trough over the Coral Sea is expected to move slowly west towards the coast
today.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms from the western Peninsula District south
into the western Channel Country, tending scattered in the Gulf Country District
during the afternoon and evening. Scattered showers about the tropical and
central coast with some moderate falls possible about the coast and ranges from
Cairns to Ingham overnight. Isolated showers over remaining eastern districts,
extending into eastern parts of the tropical and southeast interior during the
afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny conditions should persist
elsewhere. Remaining slightly cooler than average in the southeast. Moderate to
fresh SE winds along the east coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE inland.
A Severe Fire Danger over southern parts of the Channel Country district. A Very
High Fire Danger over remaining western districts and the Northern Goldfields
and Upper Flinders District.
Forecast for Saturday
The high should remain near New Zealand and weaken slightly, maintaining an
onshore flow of moisture into the north and east of the state, while the Coral
Sea trough is expected to move west onto the coast during the day. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms will extend across the eastern tropics, with
showers becoming more widespread and tending to rain at times about the coast
and ranges between Cairns and Ingham, with some moderate falls expected. Showers
will increase to scattered over remaining eastern districts in the moist onshore
flow, with isolated showers extending into the eastern interior. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions should persist elsewhere. Warm maximum temperatures are
expected to occur over western districts.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough from the Coral Sea will continue to move west over the tropics,
generating scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms north of the Flinders
Highway, with moderate falls along the coast and ranges between Cairns and
Ingham.  Moist and unstable conditions will generate isolated showers over
remaining eastern districts north of the Southeast Coast, tending more
widespread with isolated thunderstorms over the central coast and interior. The
high should weaken as it slips east of New Zealand, relaxing the east coast
ridge. Onshore winds will ease over the far southeast, resulting in fine and
mostly sunny conditions, though an upper trough over New South Wales may extend
north into the southeast interior with afternoon thunderstorms possible over the
Granite Belt. Remaining fine and sunny over the southwest, with warmer than
average maximum temperatures continuing over western districts.
Forecast for Monday
The trough from the Coral Sea will continue to move west over the tropics,
generating scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms north of the Flinders
Highway, with moderate falls possible along the coast and ranges between Cairns
and Ingham. A new high in the Great Australian Bight is expected strengthen and
move slowly eastwards, reinforcing the ridge along the east coast and generating
isolated showers north of the Sunshine Coast in a moist onshore flow. Remaining
fine and mostly sunny over the southeast coast An upper trough may trigger
isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast interior as it shifts
north over the area. Fine and sunny conditions continuing in the southwest with
warm to hot temperatures.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high in the Great Australian Bight should continue to move slowly
eastwards during the outlook period, while a broad trough remains near
stationary across the far southwest. The upper trough is expected to shift
slowly northwards, generating isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
southern and southeast interior. Showers and thunderstorms should persist about
the northern tropics in the moist unstable airflow. Isolated showers are
expected to continue over eastern districts in the moist onshore flow, scattered
at times about the coast.
