MELBOURNE - Feb 5/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers east of a line from about Rockhampton to St George. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A weak trough lies over Queensland's western districts. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Mainly isolated showers over the eastern districts, more widespread about the southeast coast. Fine and mostly sunny across much of the state's interior, except for the chance of some isolated and light showers over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Peninsula District and the far northwest. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast, light to moderate SE to NE inland. Very High Fire Danger over the Channel Country District. Forecast for Thursday The high should stall near New Zealand but is likely to maintain a ridge over Queensland's eastern districts, and fine conditions across much of the state. Mainly isolated showers should continue over the far eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the state's northwest and the Peninsula district. Forecast for Friday The high should remain near New Zealand, maintaining the ridge along Queensland's east coast, and a weak trough should form off the North Tropical Coast. This trough should work with an upper level trough approaching from the west to allow showers to become more widespread about the North Tropical Coast during the day. More isolated showers about the remainder of the far eastern districts. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the state's far northwest. Forecast for Saturday The high should remain near New Zealand and weaken slightly, but should nevertheless maintain a flow of moisture and mainly isolated showers across the far eastern districts and fine and mostly sunny conditions over the interior. Showers more widespread with some isolated thunderstorms possible about eastern tropics as the surface trough over the Coral Sea approaches. More isolated showers over the state's southeast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the state's northwest. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The high should weaken late in the weekend as it slips eastwards of New Zealand, which in turn will allow winds along Queensland's east coast to ease significantly. Nevertheless onshore winds should still be able to produce at least isolated showers over the southeast coast, and more widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms over the eastern tropics. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible near a weak surface trough over the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state except for some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and the far northwest of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
