MELBOURNE - Feb 4/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers east of a line from about Rockhampton to St George. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters south of Gladstone, including Hervey Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high over Bass Strait will move eastwards and enter the Tasman Sea this evening. The high extends a ridge along the southern east coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Fine across most of the state. Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to SW winds, fresh to strong at times about the southeast coast. A high to very high fire danger over the interior. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated showers along the east coast and adjacent inland, and also about the Carnarvon Ranges. Mostly fine over most of the remainder of the interior, although very isolated afternoon showers may develop east of about Burketown to Quilpie. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over western Cape York Peninsula near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny in the west. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE inland. A Very High Fire Danger over the Northwest and Channel Country districts. Forecast for Wednesday The high pressure system currently located over Bass Strait will move east to lie near New Zealand, and will maintain a firm ridge along Queensland's east coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions should continue across much of the state's interior with only isolated showers about the eastern districts in the onshore flow. Showers may increase to scattered about the southeast as an upper trough moves over the area. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue over the Peninsula district and are likely to extend to the Gulf Country and far northwest of the state as moisture increases in this area. Forecast for Thursday The high should remain near New Zealand and will maintain a ridge over Queensland's eastern districts and fine conditions across much of the state. Mainly isolated showers will continue about the east coast but these may increase to scattered about the central and southern coast in response to the combination of an upper trough passing over the area and a surface trough moving westwards from the Coral Sea towards the coast; the latter feature may also lead to strong winds in the coastal waters between about St Lawrence and Burnett Heads. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the state's northwest and the Peninsula district. Forecast for Friday The high will remain near stationary near New Zealand, maintaining the ridge and gradually moistening onshore flow along the east coast of Queensland. At the same time, an upper trough will move east through central Queensland, leading to some destabilisation over the east of the state. This should lead to scattered showers and the chance of a few thunderstorms over most eastern districts, although this activity should be more isolated over the far southeast. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf Country and Northwest districts. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high should weaken slightly as it lingers near New Zealand, which in turn will allow winds along Queensland's east coast to ease. Onshore winds should still be able to produce isolated showers over the eastern districts, tending scattered at times, especially about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should persist through the tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior and west of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
