Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 25/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Wide Bay and
Burnett, southeast Coast and parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt as well
as the Capricorn, Central Highlands districts.
A Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Bowen and Point Danger,
including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.
A Fire Weather Warning is current for areas west of Camooweal to Hughenden to
Charleville to Hungerford.
Flood Warnings are current for many rivers over eastern Queensland.

Weather Situation
The monsoon low occurs close to the Capricorn district. A strong ridge of
higher pressure is located over the coral sea connected to a high near New
Zealand. A trough occurs near the western border of Queensland which extends
south into Victoria. The monsoon low is expected to move slowly south in the
forecast period with heavier rain areas extending into the southeast region.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Rain areas over much of the southeast region with heavier falls occurring
through the Capricorn, Wide Bay and Burnett regions. Lighter rainfall extending
west into the southeast part of the Central Highlands and Darling Downs
districts. Isolated showers further west into the Maranoa and extending north
through the central interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York
Peninsula becoming isolated further south. Dry in the west  with moderate to
fresh S to SE winds. Light to moderate W to NW winds over the tropics, moderate
to fresh SW winds on the northeast tropical coast. Strong and gusty NE winds
along the central and southeast coast. Severe to Extreme fire dangers in the
west. High to very high fire danger over the central interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon low moves into the Capricorn region with contracting rain areas.
Rain areas generally over the greater southeast region with some heavy falls.
Isolated showers over the southern interior, isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the eastern interior north of the monsoon low. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms continuing over Cape York Peninsula. Strong and Gale force winds
persisting about the central and southeast coasts. Dry and hot in the west with
moderate to fresh S to SE winds and severe fire danger. Moderate W to NW winds
across the tropics. Moderate to fresh NW to SW winds along the NE tropical
coast. Strong and gusty E to NE winds about the central and southeast coast.
Rough surf and coastal erosion likely about the Wide Bay and southeast coasts.
Forecast for Sunday
The monsoon low moves into the Wide Bay region with continued heavy rain and
squally winds over the southeast region. No change in the tropics, isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the eastern interior northwest of the monsoon
low. General rain over the Darling Downs and isolated showers into the Maranoa
district. Dry over the central and west.
Forecast for Monday
The low finally weakens in the southeast region and the winds will finally
decrease. Rainfall will gradually decrease on the southeast coast. Isolated
showers generally through the Darling Downs. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
through the Capricorn and Wide Bay regions. Fine over the interior and on the
central coast. Showers and thunderstorms in the tropics.
Forecast for Tuesday
A weak trough remains after the low but the weather continues to weaken over
the southeast region. Isolated showers remaining on the southeast coast. Fine
over the interior and most of the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms in the
tropics.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Showers about the southeast coast and central  coast on Wednesday with
reducing thunderstorms in the tropics. By Thursday a trough redevelops over the
eastern interior with thunderstorms redeveloping over the southeast interior.
This will continue into Friday with thunderstorm activity extending north
through the eastern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
