Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Oswald, over land to the southwest of Cairns, then along the Queensland
east coast to near Gladstone. The trough, and low, are expected to move slowly
southwards over the next couple of days. A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a
ridge over southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms about
eastern districts and adjacent inland areas between about Cooktown and Fraser
Island, contracting south to Townsville during the day. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, tending isolated about remaining eastern
and southern inland districts. Isolated showers about the southeast coast.
Mostly sunny and warm to hot over the west. Fresh to strong and gusty W to NW
winds about the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds elsewhere. Severe fire
danger over the Northwest, Central West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders,
Maranoa and Warrego and Channel Country districts, Very High in the Central
Highlands and Coalfields, Gulf Country and Darling Downs and Granite Belt
districts.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon low is expected to move slowly south-southeastwards over land
near the central coast, maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and
isolated thunderstorms about eastern districts and adjacent inland between
Townsville and Fraser Island. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the
remaining northern tropics. An upper trough over eastern Queensland is forecast
to trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms about remaining eastern inland
districts, easing to showers in the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny
over southern and western parts. Windy conditions about the east coast between
about Cape Melville and Cape Moreton.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough and low are expected to continue moving slowly
south-southeastwards over land near the Capricornia. This will maintain squally,
moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms about eastern
districts and adjacent inland between about Mackay and Fraser Island. Weaker,
humid monsoon westerly flow will continue over the northern tropics, with
scattered showers and thunderstorms. The upper trough eastern Queensland will
combine with moist onshore winds to trigger scattered showers and rain areas
about the remaining southeast coast and adjacent inland, tending to isolated
showers in the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and
western parts.
Forecast for Sunday
The monsoon low is likely to be in the vicinity of the Capricorn or Wide Bay
coast and should lead to rain areas, scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the southeast of the state, heaviest near the low. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue in moderate monsoon flow over
the far north, tending more isolated about remaining eastern districts and the
southeast interior. Fine and warm to hot conditions in the west.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The low will likely remain offshore from southeast Queensland and continue to
bring some rain areas, isolated thunderstorms and windy conditions to
southeastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms to persist in the
tropics in a moderate monsoonal wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny through much of
inland Queensland, likely extending into the central coast region.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
