MELBOURNE - Jan 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current areas east of Torres Strait to Georgetown to Yeppoon for heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts. A Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Sandy Cape. A Fire Weather Warning is current for areas west of Camooweal o Hughenden to Charleville to Hungerford. Flood Warnings are current in the North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough lies from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald, over land to the southwest of Cairns, then along the Queensland east coast to near Gladstone. The trough, and low, are expected to move slowly southwards over the next couple of days. A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms about eastern districts and adjacent inland areas between about Cooktown and Fraser Island, contracting south to Townsville during the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, tending isolated about remaining eastern and southern inland districts. Isolated showers about the southeast coast. Mostly sunny and warm to hot over the west. Fresh to strong and gusty W to NW winds about the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds elsewhere. Severe fire danger over the Northwest, Central West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Maranoa and Warrego and Channel Country districts, Very High in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Gulf Country and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Forecast for Friday The monsoon low is expected to move slowly south-southeastwards over land near the central coast, maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms about eastern districts and adjacent inland between Townsville and Fraser Island. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining northern tropics. An upper trough over eastern Queensland is forecast to trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms about remaining eastern inland districts, easing to showers in the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western parts. Windy conditions about the east coast between about Cape Melville and Cape Moreton. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough and low are expected to continue moving slowly south-southeastwards over land near the Capricornia. This will maintain squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms about eastern districts and adjacent inland between about Mackay and Fraser Island. Weaker, humid monsoon westerly flow will continue over the northern tropics, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The upper trough eastern Queensland will combine with moist onshore winds to trigger scattered showers and rain areas about the remaining southeast coast and adjacent inland, tending to isolated showers in the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western parts. Forecast for Sunday The monsoon low is likely to be in the vicinity of the Capricorn or Wide Bay coast and should lead to rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast of the state, heaviest near the low. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue in moderate monsoon flow over the far north, tending more isolated about remaining eastern districts and the southeast interior. Fine and warm to hot conditions in the west. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The low will likely remain offshore from southeast Queensland and continue to bring some rain areas, isolated thunderstorms and windy conditions to southeastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms to persist in the tropics in a moderate monsoonal wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny through much of inland Queensland, likely extending into the central coast region. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
