MELBOURNE - Jan 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time 1. A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Peninsula district, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays districts, for heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts and abnormally high tides. 2. A Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and St Lawrence. 3. A Strong Wind Warning is current for northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. 4. A Fire Weather Warning is current for parts of the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central West, North West, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. 5. Flood Warnings are current in the North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough lies from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald over land to the west of Port Douglas, to near Innisfail on the east coast and into the western Coral Sea, and is expected to move slowly southwards, along the east coast over the next couple of days. A surface trough extends across the southwest parts of the state, while a weak high over southern Australia will move into the Tasman Sea today, extending a ridge along the southern east coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms northeast of a line from Kowanyama to St Lawrence. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms for remaining areas northeast of a Normanton to Richmond to Gladstone. Isolated showers about the remainder of the east coast and adjacent inland, with isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state, tending fresh to strong about the tropical and central coasts. Fresh to strong NW to NE winds about the Gulf and far north. Severe to Extreme Fire Danger in the Gulf Country, North West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. Very High Fire Danger in the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Forecast for Thursday Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms along the east coast and adjacent inland between about Cardwell and Yeppoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern tropics northeast of a line from about Normanton to Gladstone, with scattered showers and local thunder near the east coast further south. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over southern and southeastern parts, tending scattered about the Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Mostly sunny and hot over the west. Fresh to strong and gusty NW to NE winds about the eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh Se to E winds elsewhere. A Severe to Extreme fire danger over the Northwest, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego and Channel Country districts, Very High to Severe over the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, and Very High about the Central Highlands, Darling Downs, Capricornia and Gulf Country. Forecast for Friday The monsoon low is expected to move slowly south-southeastwards over land, maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms near its southern and eastern flanks. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with some locally heavy falls over the remaining eastern tropics, although more isolated about the North Tropical Coast. An upper trough over the Coral Sea is forecast to trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about southern parts of the east coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western parts. Windy conditions about the east coast north of about Bundaberg. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough and low are expected to continue moving slowly south-southeastwards near the east coast, maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms near its southern and eastern flanks. Although weaker, humid monsoon westerly flow will continue over the northern tropics, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The upper trough over the Coral Sea will combine with moist onshore winds to trigger scattered showers about the remaining east coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western parts apart from isolated late showers and thunderstorms in the far northwest. Forecast for Sunday The monsoon low is likely to be in the vicinity of the Capricorn or southern Queensland coast, and should lead to scattered showers and some rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue in moderate monsoon flow over the far north, while relatively dry conditions over the remaining eastern tropics should restrict activity to isolated showers, with just the chance of a thunderstorm or two. Fine and hot conditions in the west. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A moderate monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's north and the northern reaches of the Coral Sea, scattered showers and thunderstorms may therefore continue over the far north. Isolated to scattered showers about remaining eastern districts and isolated showers and thunderstorms from the northwest to the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest.
