Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Oswald over land to the west of Port Douglas, to near Innisfail on the
east coast and into the western Coral Sea, and is expected to move slowly
southwards, along the east coast over the next couple of days. A surface trough
extends across the southwest parts of the state, while a weak high over southern
Australia will move into the Tasman Sea today, extending a ridge along the
southern east coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms northeast of
a line from Kowanyama to St Lawrence. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms for remaining areas northeast of a Normanton to Richmond to
Gladstone. Isolated showers about the remainder of the east coast and adjacent
inland, with isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state, tending fresh to strong
about the tropical and central coasts. Fresh to strong NW to NE winds about the
Gulf and far north. Severe to Extreme Fire Danger in the Gulf Country, North
West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields,
Central West, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. Very High Fire
Danger in the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.
Forecast for Thursday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms along the
east coast and adjacent inland between about Cardwell and Yeppoon. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern tropics northeast of a line
from about Normanton to Gladstone, with scattered showers and local thunder near
the east coast further south. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over southern
and southeastern parts, tending scattered about the Darling Downs and Granite
Belt. Mostly sunny and hot over the west. Fresh to strong and gusty NW to NE
winds about the eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh Se to E winds elsewhere. A
Severe to Extreme fire danger over the Northwest, Central West, Maranoa and
Warrego and Channel Country districts, Very High to Severe over the Northern
Goldfields and Upper Flinders, and Very High about the Central Highlands,
Darling Downs, Capricornia and Gulf Country.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon low is expected to move slowly south-southeastwards over land,
maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms
near its southern and eastern flanks. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with
some locally heavy falls over the remaining eastern tropics, although more
isolated about the North Tropical Coast. An upper trough over the Coral Sea is
forecast to trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about southern
parts of the east coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over southern
and western parts. Windy conditions about the east coast north of about
Bundaberg.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough and low are expected to continue moving slowly
south-southeastwards near the east coast, maintaining squally, moderate to heavy
rain periods and isolated thunderstorms near its southern and eastern flanks.
Although weaker, humid monsoon westerly flow will continue over the northern
tropics, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The upper trough over the
Coral Sea will combine with moist onshore winds to trigger scattered showers
about the remaining east coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over
southern and western parts apart from isolated late showers and thunderstorms in
the far northwest.
Forecast for Sunday
The monsoon low is likely to be in the vicinity of the Capricorn or southern
Queensland coast, and should lead to scattered showers and some rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over the southeast of the state. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms are likely to continue in moderate monsoon flow over the far
north, while relatively dry conditions over the remaining eastern tropics should
restrict activity to isolated showers, with just the chance of a thunderstorm or
two. Fine and hot conditions in the west.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A moderate monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's north and the
northern reaches of the Coral Sea, scattered showers and thunderstorms may
therefore continue over the far north. Isolated to scattered showers about
remaining eastern districts and isolated showers and thunderstorms from the
northwest to the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
