Weather Situation
A monsoon trough lies from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Oswald near Coen, to near Cairns on the east coast. The monsoon trough
is expected to move slowly southwards, along the east coast, during Monday night
and Tuesday. A surface trough extends across the southwest parts of the state,
while a weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern east
coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms northeast
of a line from Normanton to Bowen. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
about the southern tropics and central coast, with isolated showers through
remaining eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
southern interior and fine through central parts. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds over most of the state, tending fresh to strong about the tropical coast.
Fresh to strong NW to NE winds about the Gulf and far north. Very High to Severe
Fire Danger in the North West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and
Channel Country districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms northeast
of a line from Normanton to St Lawrence. Isolated to scattered showers about the
remainder of the east coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over
most of the state, tending fresh to strong about the tropical and central
coasts. Fresh to strong NW to NE winds about the Gulf and far north. Very High
Fire Danger in the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Severe to
Extreme Fire Danger in the Gulf Country, North West, Northern Goldfields and
Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Channel Country
and Maranoa and Warrego districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms northeast of
a line from Normanton to St Lawrence. An upper level trough over central and
southeastern districts should allow isolated showers and thunderstorms over
southern and southeastern parts, tending scattered about the Darling Downs and
Granite Belt. Fine and mostly sunny with increased fire dangers over the
west.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over much of
northeastern Queensland. An upper trough over the Coral Sea is forecast to
trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the remaining east
coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western
parts.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over much of
northeastern Queensland. The upper trough over the Coral Sea will combine with
moist onshore winds to trigger scattered showers about the remaining east coast
and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny over southern and western parts apart
from isolated late showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest associated
with an approaching upper trough.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's north and the
northern reaches of the Coral Sea, squally rain areas with some moderate to
heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms may therefore continue over much of
northeastern Queensland, possibly extending further south along the east coast
into the Capricornia. Generally scattered showers about remaining southeastern
districts and fine and mostly sunny in central and western parts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
