Weather Situation
A monsoon trough lies over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, to Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Oswald near Kowanyama, and towards Cairns on the east coast. The monsoon
trough is expected to move slowly southwards during today along the east coast.
A surface trough extends across the southwest parts of the state, while a weak
high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern east coast of
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the
Gulf Country, Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Herbert and Lower Burdekin
districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the southern
tropics and central coast, with isolated showers through remaining eastern
districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior and
fine through central parts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the
state, tending fresh to strong about the tropical coast. Fresh to strong NW
winds about the Gulf and far north. Very High to Severe Fire Danger in the North
West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central West and Channel Country
districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's far north,
maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms
over the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central
Coast districts, and parts of the Gulf Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper
Flinders districts. Isolated to scattered showers about the remainder of the
east coast in the strengthening onshore flow. An upper level trough over
southern Queensland should allow isolated showers and thunderstorms over much of
the southern and eastern interior.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the
Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts, and parts
of the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Coast
districts. An upper level trough over central and southeastern districts should
allow scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over remaining eastern and
northern districts, tending more isolated inland. Fine and mostly sunny
conditions over the southwest.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over much of
northeastern Queensland. An upper trough over the Coral Sea is forecast to
trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the remaining east
coast, tending isolated about the central and eastern interior. Fine and mostly
sunny over the southern inland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's north and the
northern reaches of the Coral Sea, squally rain areas with some moderate to
heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms may therefore continue over the Peninsula
district and along the northeast coast, possibly extending southwards towards
the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should continue over parts
of the Gulf Country and remaining eastern districts. Conditions should remain
fine and mostly sunny over remaining parts of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
