Weather Situation
A monsoon trough lies over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and across Cape
York Peninsula and may move slowly south, towards the tropical coast, late on
Tuesday. Tropical Cyclone Oswald, category 1, lies over the eastern Gulf of
Carpentaria and is expected to move in an east-northeasterly direction towards
the west coast of Cape York Peninsula and make landfall this evening before
weakening. A surface trough extends across the southwest while a weak high in
the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern east coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Gusty monsoonal rain and isolated thunderstorms over the Gulf Country,
Peninsula district and along the North Tropical Coast with some moderate to
heavy falls. Mainly isolated showers about the remainder of the east coast and
eastern inland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the southwest, tending
more isolated in other southern and western districts. Light to moderate SE to
NE winds over most of the state, tending fresh at times over the northwest
interior and northeast tropics and fresh to strong NW about the Gulf of
Carpentaria and far northeast coasts.
Forecast for Tuesday
Squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the
Gulf Country, Peninsula and North Tropical Coast districts, developing about the
Herbert and Lower Burdekin district late in the day. Scattered showers about the
central coast, tending isolated further south. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southern interior and fine through central parts. Light
to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state, tending fresh to strong about
the tropical coast. Fresh to strong NW winds about the Gulf and far north.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's far north,
maintaining squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms
over the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central
Coast districts, and parts of the Gulf Country district. Isolated showers about
the remainder of the east coast in the strengthening onshore flow. An upper
level trough over southern Queensland should allow isolated showers and
thunderstorms over much of the southern and eastern interior, tending scattered
about the Darling Downs.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the
Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts, and parts
of the Gulf Country and Central Coast districts. An upper level trough over
central and southeastern districts should allow scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over remaining eastern and northern districts, tending more
isolated inland. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the south and west.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon trough and low should remain over the state's north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over much of
northeastern Queensland. An upper trough over the Coral Sea is forecast to
trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the remaining east
coast, tending isolated about the central and eastern interior. Fine and mostly
sunny over the southern inland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's north and the
northern reaches of the Coral Sea, squally rain areas with some moderate to
heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms may therefore continue over the Peninsula
district and along the northeast coast, possibly extending southwards towards
the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should continue over parts
of the Gulf Country and remaining eastern districts. Conditions should remain
fine and mostly sunny over remaining parts of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
