MELBOURNE - Jan 20/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge westwards through Bass Strait but this ridge will weaken late on Monday. A weak inland trough will linger over northeastern Victoria on Monday and Tuesday. A cold front will cross Tasmania during Tuesday. A new high pressure system will develop over the Bight late Tuesday then move quickly to the south of Tasmania during Wednesday then over the southern Tasman Sea on Thursday. A cold front linking northwards to a low pressure trough over the continent will cross the Bight on Thursday to reach the western Victorian border at night. Forecast for the rest of MondayFine apart from the chance of isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms near the eastern ranges. Areas of smoke affecting parts of central and eastern districts. A warm to hot day inland with light winds tending moderate northwest to westerly in the afternoon. Milder near the coast with moderate to fresh afternoon seabreezes.Fire Danger - High to Very High.Tuesday 22 JanuaryFine apart from the chance of isolated showers in the far east and also over the far southwest later. A generally sunny day with moderate southwest to southerly winds, fresh at times near the coast. Warm inland and milder near the coast.Wednesday 23 JanuaryFine over the north and west. Patchy drizzle over the Central and Gippsland districts, mainly during the morning. A mild to warm day with a light to moderate southeasterly wind becoming fresh to strong near the coast later.Thursday 24 JanuaryFine for most of the time. Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible over the eastern ranges during the afternoon and evening. The chance of isolated showers in the west later. A warm to hot day with a light to moderate northerly wind freshening in the west ahead of a cooler southwesterly change in the far southwest at night.
