MELBOURNE - Jan 18/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of the
Peninsula, Gulf Country and North Tropical Coast districts.
A Cyclone Watch is current for coastal communities between Mornington Island and
Aurukun.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for eastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A monsoon trough lies over the Gulf of Carpentaria and far north of Cape York
Peninsula and is expected to strengthen during the next few days. A low pressure
system lies within the monsoon trough just inland of the coast near the
Queensland and Northern Territory border. A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends
a weakening ridge along the southern east coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Gusty monsoonal rain and isolated thunderstorms over the Gulf of Carpentaria
Coast and Cape York Peninsula, with some moderate to heavy falls [see severe
weather warning]. Areas of moderate to heavy monsoonal rain also about the
North Tropical Coast [see severe weather warning]. Mainly isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics, the state's far west,
and also about the southern districts and the Central Highlands. Fine and
mostly sunny over the central interior, and mainly fine with just some isolated,
mainly light showers about the central coast. Hot over the southern districts,
particularly about the southeast. A Very High fire danger over most southern and
central districts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state,
fresh at times over the northwest interior, and fresh to strong about the Gulf
of Carpentaria and northeast coasts.
Forecast for Sunday
A low or tropical cyclone may lie over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria
waters and the monsoon trough is expected to extend eastwards from this system
across the Peninsula District and to the North Tropical Coast. Monsoonal rain
periods with moderate to heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms are expected
about the Gulf Country, the Peninsula district and over the North Tropical
Coast, and gales are possible between Mornington Island and Aurukun. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics.
Fine and mostly sunny over the central interior, and just some isolated, mainly
light showers about the central coast and Capricornia coast. Mainly isolated
showers and thunderstorms about the southern interior districts, and the chance
of some isolated showers about the southeast coast. Daytime temperatures easing
about the southeast coast as a milder onshore flow develops.
Forecast for Monday
The monsoon trough should remain over the state's far north and is likely to
continue producing squally, moderate to heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms
over the Gulf Country, Peninsula district and along the North Tropical Coast.
Mainly isolated showers about the remainder of the east coast, scattered north
of about Mackay. Fine and mostly sunny over the northwest and the central
interior. An upper level trough should work with a surface trough over the
southern inland to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms about the southern
districts.
Forecast for Tuesday
The monsoon trough should remain over the state's far north, maintaining
squally, moderate to heavy rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the Gulf
Country, Peninsula district, the North Tropical Coast and possibly as far south
as Ingham along the east coast. Mainly isolated showers about the remainder of
the east coast as the onshore flow becomes more humid. The upper level trough
over southern Queensland should allow isolated showers and thunderstorms to form
over the southern interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's far north and
the northern reaches of the Coral Sea, and squally rain areas with some moderate
to heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms may therefore continue over the
Peninsula district and along the northeast coast, and possibly extending
southwards towards the central coast by the end of the week. Fine and mostly
sunny over the state's far west and the central interior, and isolated showers
and thunderstorms over the southern interior. Isolated showers about the
southeast coast, more widespread about the Capricornia coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
