Peninsula, Gulf Country and North Tropical Coast districts.

Weather Situation
A monsoon trough lies over the Gulf of Carpentaria and far north of Cape York
Peninsula and is expected to strengthen during the next few days. A weak low
lies near Mornington Island. A weak high in the Tasman Sea extends a weakening
ridge along the southern east coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula district,
Gulf of Carpentaria coast and Torres Strait, with some heavy falls developing
and the possibility of some damaging wind gusts with the thunderstorms. Showers
and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics. Mostly fine in the
southwest with only isolated showers and possible late thunderstorms. Fine and
mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Very warm over the southeast quarter of the
state. Strong winds about the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Mostly moderate NE to
NW winds, fresh at times about the southern coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough is expected to shift a little further south to extend from
the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast to the northeast tropical coast near
Cairns. A low is likely remain in place on the monsoon trough over the southern
Gulf. Monsoonal rain and isolated thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria
Coast, Cape York Peninsula and the North Tropical Coast. Mainly isolated showers
and thunderstorms over the remaining tropics, except the central interior and
the Capricornia region where fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected. A
trough is likely to move east across the south of the state triggering isolated
showers and thunderstorms across the southern and southeast interior, tending
scattered about the far south. Hot over the southern districts, particularly
about the southeast, due to the N'ly flow ahead of the trough. A Very High fire
danger over inland districts and the Wide Bay and Burnett and the Southeast
Coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The monsoon trough is expected to remain across the southern Gulf of
Carpentaria and Peninsula District with a low possibly moving eastwards on the
trough over the Peninsula district. Monsoonal rain periods and isolated
thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula and about the Gulf of
Carpentaria and the North Tropical Coast. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropical east coast. Isolated showers
about the central and southeast coast. A new high south of the continent should
push milder southeast winds over Queensland's southeast, allowing temperatures
to ease back to around the January average. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the southern districts, possibly scattered near the southern border. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions over the central interior and the northwest.
Forecast for Monday
The monsoon trough should remain over the Peninsula district and is likely to
continue producing squally rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the
region, and possibly as far south as the North Tropical Coast. The low is likely
to continue to move eastwards and into the northwest Coral Sea. Mainly isolated
showers about the remainder of the east coast, tending scattered about the
tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country. An
upper level trough, in combination with the surface trough over the southern
inland, is likely to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms about the
southern districts. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The low over the northwest Coral Sea will lie in an a conducive environment
for further development, but is likely to remain offshore. Monsoonal showers,
squally thunderstorms and rain areas are likely to continue over the far north,
with this activity possibly reaching as far south as about Cardwell along the
east coast. Isolated to scattered showers are likely along the remainder of the
east coast as the onshore flow becomes more humid. The upper level trough over
southern Queensland should continue to provide instability over the southern
inland, with isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly near the surface
trough.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's far north, into
the northern Coral Sea. A deep tropical low or tropical cyclone is likely to be
located off the east coast over the northwestern Coral Sea. The combination of
these systems maintain squally rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
Peninsula district and along the east coast north of Townsville. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere in the northeast of the state. A
weak upper trough may produce some isolated showers and storms about the
southern and eastern districts. Isolated showers and storms are also possible
over the far northwest.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
