MELBOURNE - Jan 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A fire weather warning is current for the Channel Country. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough lies over the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to strengthen during the weekend. A high in the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along Queensland's east coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the far northern districts and the northwest, with some moderate to heavy local falls possible. Areas of rain about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the western Channel Country and about the tropical interior. Isolated showers about the central coast and also the Darling Downs, and the chance of a few isolated storms about the Granite Belt. Fine and mostly clear over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds. A Very High to Severe Fire danger in the Channel Country district. Forecast for Friday The monsoon trough should extend through the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and into the Peninsula district. Rain and isolated thunderstorms are therefore expected over the Peninsula district, Gulf of Carpentaria coast and Torres Strait. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in the southwest due to a trough approaching the southwest border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Very warm over the southeast quarter of the state. Strong winds developing about the northeast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Light to moderate SE to NE winds. A High to Very High fire danger over most southern and central districts. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough is expected to shift a little further south to extend from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast to the northeast tropical coast near Cairns. A low is likely to form on the monsoon trough over the southern Gulf, leading to strengthening winds over the northeast Gulf. Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms to the north of the monsoon trough over Cape York Peninsula. Mainly isolated showers and storms over the remaining tropics, except the central interior and the Capricornia region where fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected. A trough is likely to move east across the south of the state triggering isolated showers and thunderstorms across the southern and southeast interior, tending scattered about the far south. Hot over the southern districts, particularly about the southeast. Forecast for Sunday The monsoon trough is expected to remain across the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and Peninsula District. Monsoonal rain periods and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula and about the Gulf of Carpentaria. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the remainder of the tropical east coast. Isolated showers about the central and southeast coast. A new high south of the continent should push milder southeast winds over Queensland's southeast, allowing temperatures to ease back to around the January average. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern districts, possibly scattered near the southern border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the central interior and the northwest. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough should remain over the Peninsula district and is likely to continue producing squally rain periods and isolated thunderstorms over the region, and possibly as far south as the North Tropical Coast. Mainly isolated showers about the remainder of the east coast, though more widespread north of about Mackay. Isolated showers and storms about the Gulf Country, and fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state except for some isolated showers and storms about the southern districts. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's far north and shift eastwards into the northern Coral Sea. The monsoon through should maintain squally rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over at least the Peninsula district with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere in the northeast of the state. A weak upper trough may produce some isolated showers and storms about the southern and eastern districts. Isolated showers and storms are also possible over the far northwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
