MELBOURNE - Jan 16/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies near Queensland's western border, while a weak trough lies over the Gulf of Carpentaria. A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge up Queensland's southeast coast. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Fine and partly cloudy over the southeast quarter of the state. Mainly isolated showers and storms over the remaining eastern districts, more widespread with some moderate to heavy local falls over Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and gusty storms over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the central coast. Forecast for Thursday Scattered showers and storms about the state's far northern districts and the northwest, with some moderate to heavy local falls. Areas of patchy rain are also possible about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over Cape York Peninsula. More isolated showers and storms in a band from the northeast and central coast through the central interior and down to the Channel Country. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the central coast. A high to very high fire danger over most of the southern half of the state. Forecast for Friday A strong monsoonal flow should push into the trough over the Gulf of Carpentaria waters, and squally rain areas and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Peninsula district, Gulf of Carpentaria coast and Torres Strait. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics except the central interior where fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected. Mostly fine about the state's southwest with just the chance of some isolated storms. Fine and very warm over the southeast quarter. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough is expected to shift a little further south to extend from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast to the northeast tropical coast near Cairns. Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms to the north of the monsoon trough over Cape York Peninsula. Mainly isolated showers and storms over the remaining tropics, except the central interior and the Capricornia region where fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected. Hot over the southern districts with just the chance of some isolated showers and storms. Forecast for Sunday Monsoonal rain periods and isolated storms are expected over Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the remainder of the tropical east coast. A new high south of the continent should push milder southeast winds over Queensland's southeast, allowing temperatures to ease back to around the January average. Isolated showers and storms over the southern districts, and fine and mostly sunny conditions over the central interior and the northwest. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A strong monsoonal wind flow should continue over the state's far north, maintaining squally rain areas and isolated storms over at least the Peninsula district. Mainly fine across the remainder of the state though a weak upper trough should produce at least some isolated showers and storms about the eastern districts. Isolated showers and storms are also possible over the far northwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
