MELBOURNE - Jan 13/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country district and western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters south of Double Island Point for Monday, including Moreton Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies near the southwestern border of the state. An upper level trough extends over southeastern Australia. The troughs and an associated cooler S'ly change and some cloud cover will extend north through southern Queensland on Monday and should provide some relief from the extreme heat currently occurring. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms in the west and near the southeast inland border. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Peninsula district and through the Gulf Country, increasing to scattered north of about Weipa. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds across much of the remainder of the state, gusty at times along the southern coast and through the interior. A fresh to strong and gusty SW to SE wind change will move across far southwest parts of the state this evening. A Severe to Extreme fire danger over southern parts of the Channel Country and southern and western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district. A Very High fire danger over remaining parts of the interior, southeast districts and the Capricornia. Forecast for Monday A cooler day through southern districts with cloud increasing from the south and patchy light rain and isolated thunderstorms developing east of about Charleville, increasing to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the southeast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developing in a band from the northwest of the state to the Capricornia, increasing to scattered during the evening with patchy rain developing. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through the Peninsula and Gulf Country, scattered through Torres Strait and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny over remaining parts of the tropics. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds extending through southern districts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds in the far northern tropics, tending NE to NW over remaining parts of the state. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country and southern parts of Maranoa and Warrego district. A Very High Fire danger over remaining western districts, the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Forecast for Tuesday A high will move east into the Tasman Sea, extending a ridge along the southern Queensland coast. The S'ly wind change should move north through Capricornia waters, while the upper trough will extend from the central coast to the southwest of the state. This upper trough will combine with a deepening inland surface trough to generate scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated storms from the central and Capricorn coasts through the central interior and into the southwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur through the northern interior, likely to increase to rain areas later in the day as the upper trough shifts northwest through the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will persist through the far northwest and the northern Peninsula, and should also develop along the northeast tropical coast. Cooler conditions will occur through central districts and the southern interior due to the cloud cover. Temperatures should remain well above the January average through the northwest of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The upper trough is expected to shift into northwestern Queensland. The monsoonal NW'ly wind flow through the Gulf of Carpentaria will freshen as the inland surface trough through western Queensland deepens further. This moist wind flow should combine with the upper trough to generate cloudy conditions, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms through northern districts and parts of the central west. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should occur through central districts and into the southwest of the state in a moist E to NE wind flow to the east of the surface trough. The ridge should maintain mostly fine conditions through the southeast with only isolated showers expected, mostly near the coast. Maximum temperatures should become near or below the January average through much of the state, particularly under the thicker cloud through northern and central parts. Forecast for Thursday The upper trough or low is expected to shift west into the Northern Territory and should merge with the now deep monsoon trough extending through the Northern Territory into the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas and thunderstorms should continue through the Peninsula, Gulf Country and North West districts in the moist monsoonal flow wrapping into the trough. Scattered showers and isolated storms will occur through remaining parts of the tropics and central districts in a moist and unstable NE'ly wind flow. The unstable airmass extends into the southwest of the state though with less moisture so only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected. Conditions should remain mostly fine in the southeast under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers expected. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday A monsoon trough should extend from the Northern Territory into the far southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas and thunderstorms should persist through northern Queensland in the moist NE to NW wind flow wrapping into the trough. By comparison, southern and central districts should be mostly fine with only isolated showers and thunderstorms. Warm to hot conditions will develop again through southern Queensland during Friday and Saturday as winds tend N'ly ahead of a trough moving east over the southern border. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
