MELBOURNE - Jan 11/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country and western parts of the Warrego district. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge lies over the southwestern Coral Sea and along the Queensland tropical east coast. A surface trough lies over the far southwest and is moving out of the state. The trough separates a hot and humid airmass to its northeast from dry, hot air to its southwest. A weak monsoon trough is located across the Gulf of Papua and northwestern Coral Sea. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms for most areas of Queensland away from the east coast, though little rainfall is expected in the far southwest. Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast north of about Mackay, although mainly in the morning. Hot to very hot daytime temperatures, especially in the south and west. Light to moderate NE to NW winds, fresh at times over the southern interior. Severe fire danger over the Channel Country and western parts of the Warrego. A Very High fire danger over remaining southern and central inland districts and the Wide Bay and Burnett and Capricornia districts. Forecast for Sunday A new high over the Great Australian Bight will ensure the weak ridge remains along much of the Queensland coast with isolated coastal showers contracting to north of about Cardwell. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across northwest districts and the Peninsula district. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may occur across western districts, through the central interior into the southeastern interior, though little or no rainfall is expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue elsewhere in the state. Hot to very hot temperatures, well above the January average, will continue over much of the state, with overnight minimum temperatures also climbing to well above average over the south. Forecast for Monday The weak ridge will persist along the east coast, while the surface trough will move north and east back into Queensland ahead of an upper level trough moving eastwards over southeastern Australia. This will allow a pool of very warm air to spread eastwards across the southern inland of Queensland. Instability to the north and east of the trough should continue to support isolated showers and thunderstorms, and a coastal surface trough and fresh to strong and gusty southerly change reaching the far southeast may also trigger a few showers and thunderstorms over the southeast corner. High cloud ahead of the upper trough will produce some patchy rain over the southwest, but little or no rainfall is expected. Fine over the remainder of the state, apart from showers and thunderstorms over the Peninsula and near the Gulf of Carpentaria. Forecast for Tuesday The weak ridge will persist along the east coast, while the surface trough will move further west once more and deepen. An upper level trough will strengthen over southern Queensland, and will enhance the instability through most of the state. In response, showers and thunderstorms are expected over most areas of Queensland, becoming scattered through the interior. Showers over southeast Queensland and the tropical coast areas. Fine in the far southwest. Hot to very hot daytime temperatures, well above the January average, will continue in the north and west of the state, cooling to below average in the southeast and southern inland. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The upper trough is likely to move slowly northwards, while the monsoon flow through the Gulf of Carpentaria into the northwest of the state is likely to increase, allowing very moist air to move inland and come under the influence of the upper trough. This should lead to increasing cloud and widespread showers and thunderstorms for most northern and western parts of the state, with some moderate to heavy falls likely. Showers are likely for most eastern districts with a few thunderstorms over the adjacent inland, although it should be mostly fine over the southeast. Temperatures will continue to cool to closer to average for most parts of Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
