Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 9/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough over the southern interior is expected to remain slow moving
today, before moving southwest on Friday. A hot airmass ahead of this trough
will spread to most parts of the state and is expected to remain for a number
days. A monsoon trough is developing across the Gulf of Papua and northwestern
Coral Sea, with a weak low located along the trough in the Coral Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the north and far northwest of the
state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may occur in a band extending from the
northwest into the southeast, though little or no rainfall is expected,
especially inland.  Hot to very hot temperatures across much of the state. Light
to moderate NE to NW winds over most of the state, fresh and gusty about the
southern coast. Fresh and gusty S to SW winds over the southwest and southern
interior. A Very High fire danger for western districts, and the remainder of
southern Queensland apart from the Southeast Coast district.
Forecast for Friday
The trough situated over the Queensland interior is expected to move
westwards towards central Australia. A high situated to the east of New Zealand
will redevelop a weak ridge along the Queensland east coast. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms may occur across western districts, through the central
interior into the southeastern interior, though little or no rainfall is
expected. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across northwest
districts and the Peninsula district. Isolated showers may also develop along
the southern tropical coast, central coast and Wide Bay coast. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions should occur over the remainder of the state. Hot to very hot
daytime temperatures, well above the January average, will persist over much of
the state.
Forecast for Saturday
The weak high to the northeast of New Zealand will continue to extend a weak
ridge along much of the Queensland coast with isolated coastal showers north of
Capricornia. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across northwest
districts and the Peninsula district. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may
occur across western districts, through the central interior into the
southeastern interior, though little or no rainfall is expected. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions will continue elsewhere in the state.  Hot to very hot daytime
temperatures, well above the January average, will continue over much of the
state.
Forecast for Sunday
A new high over the Great Australian Bight will ensure the weak ridge remains
along much of the Queensland coast with isolated coastal showers contracting to
north of about Cardwell. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across
northwest districts and the Peninsula district. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms may occur across western districts, through the central interior
into the southeastern interior, though little or no rainfall is expected. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions will continue elsewhere in the state. Hot to very
hot daytime temperatures, well above the January average, will continue over
much of the state.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A trough will most likely remain slow moving near the southern Queensland
border during the outlook period. Hot daytime temperatures will persist through
much of the state, with maximum temperatures expected to be 5 to 10 degrees
above the January average during the outlook period through southern and western
districts in particular. The trough may move through southeastern districts late
Monday or early Tuesday decreasing temperatures and may also produce showers and
isolated thunderstorms about the southeast of the state. The monsoon trough will
continue to be situated across the northwestern Coral Sea. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms should occur through the Peninsula district. Mostly fine
conditions are expected through remaining parts of the state.
