MELBOURNE - Jan 3/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Northwest, and parts of the Channel Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts, and extends further to include parts of the Central West and Maranoa and Warrego districts for later today. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the Queensland east coast. A surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Freda lies over New Caledonia and is continuing to move towards the southeast. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, also developing about parts of the southeast and central interior during the afternoon. Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered at times about the North Tropical Coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Very warm to hot over western and southern Queensland. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh about the east coast. A severe fire danger over the Northwest and Channel Country, and parts of the Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. A very high fire danger in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Forecast for Saturday The stable upper pattern, combined with a firm ridge along the east coast, will maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions for majority of the state. Isolated showers are expected along the east coast, and isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, tending more scattered over the northern Peninsula and Torres Strait. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are may also develop over the far southwest during the afternoon, but little rainfall is expected. Remaining hot over western districts. Forecast for Sunday The firm ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions across the state. Isolated showers continuing about eastern districts tending to scattered in parts of the North Tropical Coast. Showers are also likely to become more scattered over the southeast with the assistance of an upper level trough, and isolated showers are likely to penetrate further inland to the eastern Darling Downs and south Burnett. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northwest parts of the state, and also over the far southwest. Showers and thunderstorms becoming more scattered over the far northern Peninsula and Torres Strait as a weak monsoon trough develops over the Arafura Sea and Papua New Guinea. Hot again over western districts. Forecast for Monday The firm ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions across the state. Isolated showers continuing about eastern districts, more scattered about the southeast, and also about the northeast tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northwest parts of the state, tending scattered with the possibility of some rain areas developing over the far north and Torres Strait. Hot over the western districts. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The ridge along the east coast is likely to weaken on Tuesday, with showers along the east coast becoming more isolated along the southern coast. A surface trough will move over southern Queensland on Wednesday, with very hot conditions spreading eastwards to the southeast coast. It is likely to be too dry ahead of this system to support any significant shower or thunderstorm activity, although a few showers may return to the east coast on Thursday as a new ridge develops along the coast. In the tropics, the monsoon trough is likely to remain in the Torres Strait area, leading to showers, thunderstorms and rain areas over the northern Peninsula and Torres Strait. Remaining fine and mainly sunny across most of the rest of the rest of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
