MELBOURNE - Jan 2/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Northwest, and parts of the Channel Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weakening ridge of high pressure lies along the tropical east coast. A surface trough and associated southerly change lies near the northern Sunshine Coast and is moving northwards. A new ridge is developing along the southern coast following the passage of the trough. Another surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Freda lies over New Caledonia and is continuing to move towards the southeast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated light showers developing along the east coast south of about Bowen, and also about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm or two developing about the southeast interior in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Very warm to hot over western and southern Queensland. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh about the east coast. A severe fire danger over the Northwest, Channel Country and far southwest parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts, very high elsewhere except for the eastern tropics and far southeast. Forecast for Friday A high over the Tasman Sea will maintain the ridge along Queensland's east coast, and this combined a strong mid level ridge over the interior should maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions across most of the state. A weak mid level trough moving over the central highlands may be enough to produce isolated late showers and thunderstorms, particularly near the higher terrain. Isolated showers about the east coast, tending more scattered about the Central Coast near a weak trough, and about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Hot over the western districts. Forecast for Saturday The stable upper pattern, combined with a firm ridge along the east coast, will maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions across the state, except for generally isolated showers about the east coast, and isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, possibly extending into the Northwest district. Hot over the western districts. Remaining hot in the west. Forecast for Sunday The firm ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions across the state. Isolated showers continuing about eastern districts, with isolated showers and thunderstorms over northwest parts of the state. Hot over the western districts. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The ridge along the east coast is likely to weaken during the period, with showers along the east coast becoming more isolated along the southern coast. Remaining fine and mostly sunny across the rest of the state, except for some isolated showers and storms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
