Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 1/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Northwest and
parts of the Channel Country districts for Wednesday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along Queensland's east
coast, while a surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state. An upper
trough extends over the southeast inland. Tropical Cyclone Freda lies well off
Queensland's east coast and is weakening.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain over the central coast and
ranges with some local moderate to heavy falls possible with thunderstorms.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern
tropics and the central highlands. Isolated showers about the Wide Bay. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the southwest. Powerful E to NE swell along the
east coast south of Agnes Waters. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the central
coast, light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper level trough will lie over the state's northern reaches and should
support the development of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
far northern districts. More isolated showers are likely about most of the
remainder of the east coast and nearby inland areas north of about Yeppoon.
Conditions should be mostly fine sunny in the southeast, although one or two
light showers may develop about the Gold Coast in the evening following the
onset of a fresh S to SE wind change. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior
and becoming very warm to hot over the southern districts. Mostly moderate SE to
E winds, fresh at times along the tropical east coast and the far west. A Very
High to Severe fire danger over the Northwest and parts of the Channel Country,
Very High fire danger elsewhere except for the tropical east coast and adjacent
inland and the Peninsula.
Forecast for Thursday
A high over the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge along Queensland's east coast,
and this combined with a stable upper pattern, should result in fine and mostly
sunny conditions across the state, except for some isolated showers about parts
of the east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also expected about
the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Very warm to hot conditions should persist about
the western and southern interior.
Forecast for Friday
A high over the Tasman Sea will maintain the ridge along Queensland's east
coast, and this combined with stable conditions in the upper atmosphere will
lead to fine conditions across most of the state. Just isolated showers about
the east coast and isolated showers and storms about the Central Highlands and
Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Very hot conditions are expected to persist over the
southern interior and northwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The ridge is likely to persist about the east coast, while the stability in
the upper atmosphere provided by an upper ridge over the south of the state is
also likely to persist. This should lead to a continuation of breezy conditions
and a few showers along the east coast, and a few thunderstorms near the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast, while remaining fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of
the state. Very hot conditions should continue over the west and southern
inland.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The ridge along the east coast should build in strength as a high moves over
southeastern Australia, while a low pressure system, the remnants of Tropical
Cyclone Freda, may begin to move steadily west-northwestwards across the Coral
Sea. The combination of these two systems may produce a tightening pressure
gradient along the east coast of Queensland, with winds and shower activity
increasing along parts of the east coast. It should remain mostly fine
conditions across the remainder of the state, although isolated showers and
thunderstorms are likely to continue about the far northern districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
