Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 31/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Cape Bowling Green to Burnett Heads.

Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along Queensland's east coast, while
a surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state. An upper trough
extends from the northwest of the state to the central east coast. Severe
Tropical Cyclone Freda lies over the eastern Coral Sea and is expected to track
southwards over the next few days, remaining well away from the Australian
mainland.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain with some moderate to locally heavy
falls about the northeast and central coast from about Cairns to St. Lawrence.
More isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics.
Mostly fine across the southern districts with only isolated showers and
thunderstorms west of Charleville. Scattered showers about the Capricornia and
Wide Bay coasts. Fine and mostly clear over the state's southeast, except for
some isolated light showers near the coast. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds,
fresh at times about the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain over the northeast and
central coast and ranges with some moderate to locally heavy falls possible
between about Cairns and Gladstone. Scattered showers and isolated storms over
the remainder of the northern tropics, and also about the remainder of the
Capricornia, Wide Bay and Sunshine coasts. Patchy areas of mainly light rain
over the Central Highlands and Burnett region.  Mainly fine over the central and
southern interior except the chance of some isolated showers and storms.  Fine
and mostly sunny over the state's southeast. Powerful E to NE swell is expected
to develop along the east coast south of Agnes Waters in response to the Severe
Tropical Cyclone Freda which will remain over the far eastern Coral Sea.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper level trough should lie over the state's northern reaches with
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over far northern districts. More
isolated showers about most of the remainder of the east coast and nearby inland
areas, though conditions should be fine and mostly sunny in the southeast. Fine
and mostly sunny over the interior and becoming very warm to hot over the
southern districts.
Forecast for Thursday
A high over the Tasman Sea should extend a ridge along Queensland's east
coast, combined with a stable upper pattern, should result in fine and mostly
sunny conditions across the state, except for some isolated showers about parts
of the east coast and southern border ranges. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
are also likely to persist about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Very warm to hot
conditions should persist about the western and southern interior.
Forecast for Friday
A high over the Tasman Sea should extend a ridge along Queensland's east
coast, combined with  stable conditions in the upper atmosphere will lead to
fine conditions across most of the state. A few showers are likely to continue
about the exposed east coast, with one or two thunderstorms near the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Very hot conditions are expected to persist over the southern
interior and northwest.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The ridge along the east coast should deliver mostly fine conditions across
the state, though isolated to scattered showers and fresh SE winds are likely
along the east coast, and isolated showers and storms about the far northern
districts.

Tuesday.
