Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 30/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the western and
southern interior southwest of a line from Mount Isa to Goodooga.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Cape Bowling Green
to Point Danger, including Hervey and Moreton Bays.

Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge up Queensland's east
coast, while a surface trough stretches from the state's northwest down to the
southern interior. Tropical Cyclone Freda is south of the Solomon Islands and is
expected to track southwards over the next few days, all the while remaining
well away from the Australian mainland.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms across most of the state's eastern
reaches, and more widespread activity about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and
over the coast and nearby inland areas between about Cairns and St. Lawrence.
Mainly fine over the central and southern interior, though some isolated showers
and gusty storms are possible. Fine and dry over the state's southwest, with
severe to extreme fire dangers southwest of a line from about Mount Isa to
Goodooga.  Light to moderate E to SE winds, fresh at times about the east coast
and the Channel Country.
Forecast for Monday
A mid level trough should stretch from the state's northwest down to the
central coast area, and should work with a humid onshore wind flow to produce
showers, thunderstorms and periods of rain and some moderate to locally heavy
falls about the northeast and central coast from about Cairns to St. Lawrence.
More isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the tropics, and
some moderate to possibly heavy local falls with storms over the northern
interior. Mostly fine across the southern districts with only isolated showers
and storms west of Charleville.  Fine and mostly sunny over the state's
southeast, except for some isolated showers over the Sunshine and Wide Bay
coasts.  A high to very high fire danger acoss the interior and Capricornia
districts. Light to moderate E to SE winds, fresh at times about the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The mid level trough should stretch from the state's northwest to the
southeast, and it, along with a continuing onshore flow, should maintain
showers, storms and areas of rain over the northeast and central coast and
ranges, and some moderate to locally heavy falls are possible. Scattered showers
and isolated storms over the remainder of the northern tropics, and also about
the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Sunshine coasts. Patchy areas of mainly light rain
over the Central Highlands and Burnett region.  Mainly fine over the central and
southern interior except the chance of some isolated showers and storms.  Fine
and mostly sunny over the state's southeast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The mid level trough should lie over the state's northern reaches, and it
should help scattered showers and isolated storms to form over the far northern
districts. More isolated showers about most of the remainder of the east coast
and nearby inland areas, though conditions should be fine and mostly sunny in
the southeast. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior, and very warm to hot
over the southern districts ahead of a cooler southerly change about the
southeast coast late in the day.
Forecast for Thursday
A high over the Tasman Sea should extend a ridge up Queensland's east coast,
resulting in fine and mostly sunny conditions across the state, except for some
isolated showers about parts of the east coast and southern border ranges, and
some isolated showers and storms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The ridge along the east coast should deliver mostly fine conditions across
the state, though at least isolated showers are expected about parts of the east
coast, and isolated showers and storms about the far northern districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
