MELBOURNE - Dec 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for southwestern parts of the Channel Country district for later today. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge of high pressure extends along Queensland's east coast. A surface trough lies over the Channel Country and far northern New South Wales, and is expected to move along the southeast Queensland coast today producing a fresh southerly wind change. An upper level trough moving over New South Wales and southern Queensland today is expected to move over southeast Queensland today. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the southern interior and central and southeast districts, with early thundery rain over the southeast. Some storms are likely to be severe. Moderate to locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over the west and northwest. Mostly fine over the northeast tropics and fine over the far southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, shifting NE to NW over the interior and moderate to fresh S to SE over the Channel Country. A Severe Fire Danger in parts of the Channel Country. A Very High fire danger in the Northwest and Capricornia districts. Forecast for Thursday The upper trough should extend from the central interior to the southeast, moving offshore during the day. This combined with generally humid conditions should result in scattered showers and thunderstorms across most inland parts of the state. However, it should remain mostly fine over the northeast tropics with just a few showers along the east coast, due to the presence of a drier airmass over the region. The passage of the surface trough over the far southeast should bring scattered showers, although thunderstorms are much less likely in the deepening SE flow. Remaining fine in the far southwest. Day time temperatures a little below average in central and southeast districts. Forecast for Friday The surface trough is likely to persist over the far southwest and over northern New South Wales. Another upper level trough is forecast to move across southern Queensland and is likely to spread scattered showers and thunderstorms across most of western, central, southern and southeast Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over the far northern tropics, though much less likely in the northeast tropics due to some drier air remaining in place. Fine over the far southwest. Day time temperatures remaining a little below average in central and southern districts. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough is likely to weaken but remain near the southwest Queensland border. An upper level trough is expected to lie over southern and central areas of the state and maintain a broad unstable airmass over northern, eastern and southern Queensland with showers and thunderstorms, more isolated over the central and southern interior. Day time temperatures near or a little above average in the south, and a little below average in the tropical interior. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The surface trough is likely to persist near far western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected to continue across most of the state, mostly contracting into the tropics and far west during the period as the upper trough moves over these areas and as a high south of the continent pushes drier air across the southern and central interior. However, showers are likely to continue about remaining eastern districts in an onshore flow, aided by a low over the eastern Coral Sea. Temperatures near average, rising to above average during the day in the far west from late in the weekend. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
