MELBOURNE - Dec 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1021 hPa] in the central Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough extends over far western Queensland. A strengthening upper trough lies from the northwest of the state into the southern interior and will move slowly northeast into the southern tropics. A low level trough over the northwestern Coral Sea will move westwards and onto the tropical east coast on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the state, through the central interior and into the southeast interior. Mostly cloudy conditions through central districts and the southern tropics with isolated showers and possible inland thunderstorms. Isolated showers near the southeast coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the east coast. Forecast for Sunday Showers, isolated thunderstorms and patchy rain areas developing over much of the tropics, with some moderate to heavy falls possible about the east coast and ranges between about Cairns and St Lawrence. Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the remainder of the tropics and through the southern and central interior. Mainly isolated showers are expected about the Capricorn and southeast coasts in an onshore wind flow, although isolated thunderstorms will still be possible over the inland parts. A Very High fire danger over the Channel Country and Warrego and Maranoa. Forecast for Monday The upper trough should extend from the Gulf Country to the central coast whilst the ridge along the east coast is expected to weaken. Scattered showers, thunderstorms and rain areas should continue through most of the tropics tending more isolated about the Capricornia coast. Meanwhile the southern half of the state should see only isolated showers and inland thunderstorms, most likely about the southern border ranges. Mostly fine conditions about the southeast coast with only isolated showers. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level trough should remain over the far northern tropics, resulting in scattered showers and storms and patchy areas of rain over the region. Drier air associated with a mid level ridge will leave the central districts mainly fine, though some isolate showers and storms are possible. A new surface trough should move across the southern districts and produce scattered showers and storms over the southern interior. Mainly fine over the state's southeast, except for some isolated showers, mainly near the coast. Above average daytime temperatures about the southern districts in a northerly wind flow. Forecast for Wednesday A broad upper trough over central Queensland combined with a relatively moist and unstable airmass lying east of a surface trough over far southwestern Queensland should continue to support isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over much of the state, particularly over the southeast quarter. Fine conditions are likely to the west of the surface trough. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday A series of upper level trough systems is likely to move over the state during this period, prolonging the shower and thunderstorm activity over eastern inland parts, and some of this activity may reach the east coast at times. The inland trough is likely to move gradually eastwards in response to the upper troughs, leading to dry air and fine conditions becoming established over the southwestern half of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
