Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 18/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for parts of the Channel
Country, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt
districts for today.
A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for parts of the Channel Country and
Maranoa and Warrego districts for Wednesday.

Weather Situation
A weak ridge lies over the western Coral Sea off the Queensland coast. A
complex surface trough is lying from the northwest to the southeast interior,
with humid and unstable conditions to its north and east. An upper level trough
is moving over southeast Queensland and off the coast on Wednesday, as another
upper trough moves into central Australia.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the north, northwest, central
and southeast districts with moderate to locally heavy falls. Some of these
thunderstorms will likely be severe. Cloudy over the southwest with light patchy
rain. Fine along the tropical east coast. A hot day over central and southeast
districts. Moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times along the southern coasts,
shifting moderate to fresh SW to SE over the southwest and southeast interior. A
Severe fire danger in parts of the Channel Country, Central West, Maranoa and
Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. A Very High fire danger
in the North West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, and Wide Bay
and Burnett districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the north, northwest, central
and southeast interior with some moderate to heavy falls. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms about the central and southeast coasts. Cloudy with patchy light
rain and isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southwest. Fine along the
tropical east coast. A very warm day over the southern inland. Moderate NW to NE
winds, fresh at times along the southern coasts, shifting moderate to fresh SW
to SE over the southwest and southeast interior. A Severe fire danger in parts
of the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. A Very High fire
danger in the Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, and Capricornia
districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough is likely to remain near the southwest Queensland border,
while the upper trough moves eastwards across southern Queensland. A cloud band
with showers, rain areas and thunderstorms will extend from the northwest to the
southern interior and spread eastwards during the day. Isolated showers or
thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated showers and patchy rain areas
near the southern coast, increasing from the west late in the day with a few
thunderstorms also possible. Day time temperatures trending below average over
the interior due to the increased cloud.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough is likely to remain near the southwest Queensland border,
while the upper trough will likely move slowly eastwards over central and
southeast Queensland. The cloud band with showers, rain areas and thunderstorms
will remain through areas from the northwest to the southeast. Isolated showers
over the tropical coast. Day time temperatures generally below average over the
interior due to the increased cloud.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough is likely to remain slow moving near the southwest
Queensland border, while the upper trough will move towards the north over the
central areas of the state. The cloud band with showers, rain areas and
thunderstorms will shift northwards over the central and southern tropics of
Queensland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the interior of the state.
Isolated showers in remaining eastern districts. Day time temperatures generally
below average over the interior due to the increased cloud.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The surface trough is likely to weaken as it moves west into central
Australia. A new high moving into the Tasman Sea is expected to extend a ridge
and onshore winds over eastern Queensland showers. The upper level trough is
likely to move slowly over the tropics while weakening as the next upper trough
moves through central Australia during Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms
expected to continue over parts of the interior. Isolated showers generally in
eastern districts.
