MELBOURNE - Dec 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for parts of the Channel Country, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge lies over the western Coral Sea off the Queensland coast. A complex surface trough is lying from the northwest to the southeast interior, with humid and unstable conditions to its north and east. An upper level trough is moving over southeast Queensland today, with another upper trough moving into central Australia. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the north, northwest, central and southeast districts with moderate to locally heavy falls. Some of these thunderstorms will likely be severe. Cloudy over the southwest with light patchy rain. Fine along the tropical east coast. A hot day over central and southeast districts. Moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times along the southern coasts, shifting moderate to fresh SW to SE over the southwest and southeast interior. A Severe fire danger in parts of the Channel Country, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. A Very High fire danger in the North West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Forecast for Wednesday The surface trough is likely to move west with showers and thunderstorms expected to continue over most of the state including the southeast, but particularly over inland areas. An upper level trough is expected to move into far western Queensland and is likely to increase showers and thunderstorms over western districts along with areas of rain and some moderate to heavy falls. Remaining fine over the far eastern tropics. Day time temperatures remaining very warm to hot in the south. Forecast for Thursday The surface trough is likely to remain near the southwest Queensland border, while the upper trough moves eastwards across southern Queensland. A cloud band with showers, rain areas and thunderstorms will extend from the northwest to the southern interior and spread eastwards during the day. Isolated showers or thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated showers and patchy rain areas near the southern coast, increasing from the west late in the day with a few thunderstorms also possible. Day time temperatures trending below average over the interior due to the increased cloud. Forecast for Friday The surface trough is likely to remain near the southwest Queensland border, while the upper trough will likely move slowly eastwards over central and southeast Queensland. The cloud band with showers, rain areas and thunderstorms will remain through areas from the northwest to the southeast. Isolated showers over the tropical coast. Day time temperatures generally below average over the interior due to the increased cloud. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The surface trough is likely to weaken as it moves west into central Australia. A new high moving into the Tasman Sea is expected to extend a ridge and onshore winds over eastern Queensland during the weekend with showers. The upper level trough is likely to move slowly over the tropics, accompanied by a band of showers, rain and thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy falls. A humid and unstable environment is likely to persist over the remainder of the state with isolated showers and thunderstorms, contracting to the north of the state on Monday. Day time temperatures trending below average over the interior and southeast due to the increased cloud. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
