MELBOURNE - Dec 16/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time

Darling Downs and Granite Belt district for later today.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge lies over the western coral Sea off the Queensland coast. A
complex surface trough is lying over western Queensland and the southern
interior, with hot NW winds over the interior to its east.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the north, west and central
interior; more widespread with areas of rain and locally moderate to heavy falls
over the northwest. Fine along the tropical east coast. A hot to very hot day
over central and southeast districts. Moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times
along the southern coast, shifting moderate to fresh SW to SE over the southwest
and southeast interior. A Severe fire danger over the western Darling Downs and
Granite Belt district. A Very High fire danger in the remaining southeast
districts, all central districts, the Channel Country and the Maranoa and
Warrego districts.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough is expected to lie from the northern Channel Country to
the southeast interior with hot and unstable conditions to continue to its north
and east. Generally scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in a band
from the north and northwest of the state down through the central interior and
into the southeast. An upper trough over the Northern Territory may assist in
producing further rain areas and moderate to heavy falls over the northwest of
the state. A weak SE change may produce some light showers or drizzle over the
far southeast. Fine over the northeast tropical coast. Fine though partly cloudy
over the far southwest and far southern interior in the drier air southwest of
the trough. Hot day time temperatures are expected to continue over central and
southern districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough is likely to move west with showers and thunderstorms
expected to continue over most of the state including the southeast, but
particularly over inland areas. The upper level trough is expected to move into
far western Queensland and is likely to increase showers and thunderstorms over
western districts along with areas of rain and some moderate to heavy falls.
Remaining fine over the far eastern tropics. Day time temperatures remaining
very warm to hot in the south.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough is likely to remain near the southwest Queensland border,
while the upper trough moves eastwards across southern Queensland. A cloud band
with showers, rain areas and thunderstorms will extend from the northwest to the
southern interior and spread eastwards during the day. Isolated showers or
thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated showers and patchy rain areas
near the southern coast, increasing from the west late in the day with a few
thunderstorms also possible. Day time temperatures trending below average over
the interior due to the increased cloud.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The surface trough is likely to remain near the far southwest Queensland
border before weakening and moving west into central Australia during the
weekend. A new high moving into the Tasman Sea is expected to extend a ridge and
onshore winds over eastern Queensland during the weekend. The upper level trough
is likely to move slowly eastwards over central and southeast Queensland during
Friday and then over the tropics during the weekend, accompanied by a band of
showers, rain and thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy falls. A humid
and unstable environment is likely to persist over the remainder of the state
with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Day time temperatures trending below
average over the interior and southeast due to the increased cloud.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
