Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 15/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for abnormally high tides
for parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts for Sunday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weak ridge over far eastern
Queensland. A surface trough is moving across southwest Queensland and the
southern interior, with hot N to NW winds over the interior to its east. A
trough well offshore over the Coral Sea is weakening, with moderate E'ly swells
along the southeast Queensland coast expected to decrease during Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Fine and mostly clear over the eastern half of the state, though some high
cloud spreading over the southeast. Cloudy over the west with showers and gusty
thunderstorms, more widespread over the northwest. Moderate NW to NE winds,
shifting fresh and gusty S to SW'ly over the Channel Country and southern
interior. Moderate E to SE swells along the southeast coast.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over the north and west of the
state, increasing to areas of rain, scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms
over the northwest and tropical interior with moderate to locally heavy falls.
Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere after some early high cloud. A hot day over
central and southern districts. Moderate E to SE swells, higher than normal
tides and some beach erosion about the coast south of Sandy Cape, decreasing in
the afternoon. Moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times along the southern coast,
shifting moderate S to SW over the southwest and southeast interior. A Very High
fire danger in most districts, apart from the far north and northwest.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough is expected to extend from the west to the southeast
interior. A flow of hot, humid air ahead of the trough should allow areas of
rain, showers and thunderstorms over the Gulf Country, northwest and tropical
interior with moderate to heavy falls. More isolated showers and thunderstorms
are likely over the central interior and possibly about the southeast border
ranges. Mainly fine about the tropical east coast, though some isolated showers
may occur late in the day. Hot to very hot temperatures expected over central
and southeast districts with an enhanced fire danger.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough is expected to lie from the northern Channel Country to
the southeast interior with hot and unstable conditions to continue to its north
and east. Generally scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in a band
from the north and northwest of the state down through the central interior and
into the southeast. Mostly fine over the northeast tropical coast, though there
is the chance of isolated showers. Fine though partly cloudy over the far
southwest and far southern interior in the drier air southwest of the trough.
Hot day time temperatures are expected to continue over central and southern
districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough is likely to move west with showers and thunderstorms
expected to continue over most of the state, particularly over inland areas,
including the southeast. An upper level trough near the western Queensland
border is likely to increase showers and thunderstorms over western districts,
with areas of rain and the possibility of some heavier falls during the day. Day
time temperatures remaining very warm to hot in the south.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The surface trough is likely to remain over western districts during the
period and continue to generate areas of cloud with rain, showers and
thunderstorms over most of the interior on Thursday, before the upper trough
moves eastwards and spreads this activity back into central and southeast
districts from Friday. Moderate to heavy falls may occur with the rain and
thunderstorms. Some showers are expected to continue over the northeast tropics.
Day time temperatures trending below average over the interior due to the
increased cloud.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
