MELBOURNE - Dec 14/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for abnormally high tides for parts of the Wide Bay Burnett and Southeast Coast districts. A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel Country districts and parts of the Maranoa and Warrego districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies well offshore in the Coral Sea and strong winds to its south is pushing a moderate swell along Queensland's southeast coast. A broad area of low pressure lies over Central Australia. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Fine and mostly sunny over the eastern half of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the western half of the state, becoming more widespread during the day, though little rain is expected over the Channel Country. Moderate E to SE swells, higher than normal tides and beach erosion are expected to continue south of Sandy Cape. Very warm daytime temperatures over the southern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the eastern districts and light to moderate NW to SW winds over western Queensland. A Severe Fire Danger in the Channel Country district and parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district. A Very High Fire Danger elsewhere in western districts, central districts and parts of the southeast. Forecast for Sunday A surface trough should extend from the Channel Country to the southeast interior. Mainly scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected ahead of the surface trough over the northwest of the state and the southern tropical interior, before spreading to areas of thundery rain during the day. Some moderate to heavy local falls are expected about the northwest interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate E to SE swells and higher than normal tides about the exposed parts of the southeast coast. Very warm to hot over the southern interior. Forecast for Monday The surface trough should extend between the northwest interior and the southeast interior. A flow of warm, humid air ahead of the trough should allow mainly scattered showers and thunderstorms to form near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over the tropical interior, spreading to areas of thundery rain during the day. Some moderate to heavy local falls are possible about the northwest interior. Mainly fine about the tropical east coast, though some isolated showers may occur late in the day. Humid and very warm to hot conditions over the southern interior and the southeast districts. Forecast for Tuesday The surface trough should remain over the state's interior and mainly scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected ahead of it in a band from the northwest of the state down through the central interior and into the southeast. Mostly fine over the northeast coast, though with the chance of some isolated showers late in the day. Fine though partly cloudy over the southern interior. Very warm to hot over the southern districts. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The surface trough may retreat back into the state's southwest around the middle of the week, and scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected near and east of it over the state's western districts and parts of the interior. An upper level trough may also allow the showers and thunderstorms to spread to a thundery rain area over the state's southwest from mid week. Mainly fine about the eastern districts except for some isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast on Wednesday, and isolated showers on Friday.
