MELBOURNE - Dec 14/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for abnormally high tides for parts of the Wide Bay Burnett and Southeast Coast districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies well offshore in the Coral Sea and strong winds to its south are increasing swells along Queensland's southeast coast. Another surface trough lies over the Northern Territory and will move into far western Queensland on Saturday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Fine across most of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the Wide Bay coast. A Very High fire danger over the interior of the state and about the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Forecast for Saturday Fine and mostly sunny over eastern districts, except for isolated light showers about the far northeast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developing over western districts and along the west coast of Cape York Peninsula late in the day. Cloud is expected to increase over the southwest of the state with isolated showers and thunderstorms developing, but little rainfall. Large E to SE swells, higher than normal tides and beach erosion are expected to continue south of Sandy Cape. Very warm daytime temperatures over the southwest and southern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, tending moderate NW to SW over western Queensland. Forecast for Sunday The inland surface trough should move further eastwards over the southern interior with very warm to hot and humid conditions over much of the interior ahead of the trough. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northwest of the state and southern tropics, spreading to areas of thundery rain during the day, with some local moderate to heavy falls possible. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere in the tropics, far northern Channel Country and the central interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. The E to SE swells over the southeast coast should ease significantly. Forecast for Monday The surface trough should become slow moving over the southern interior, with moist and unstable air to its north and east. Scattered showers, thunderstorms and areas of thundery rain are expected across the tropics, with some local moderate to heavy falls likely with any thunderstorm clusters that develop. More isolated showers and thunderstorms are also expected over the central interior and central coast. Humid and very warm to hot conditions over the southern interior and southeast districts. Forecast for Tuesday The inland surface trough should remain almost stationary, with moist and unstable conditions persisting to its north and east. This should lead to isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over most eastern and northern districts. It should be fine and hot over the channel Country and Warrego. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday A trough about the southern interior is likely to retreat into the southwest of the state by Thursday. Moist, unstable air to the north and east of the trough should maintain scattered shower and thunderstorm activity over the tropics whilst more isolated activity is possible over the central interior and the state's southeast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may spread into the state's southern interior later in the week as a surface trough strengthens in the region, whilst conditions about the central coast and the southeast coast district may become mainly fine. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
