MELBOURNE - Dec 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from
Gladstone to Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for abnormally high tides for parts of the
Wide Bay Burnett and Southeast Coast districts.

Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea is maintaining a ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. The high is expected to weaken and move towards New Zealand on
Friday. A surface trough lies well offshore in the Coral Sea, and strong winds
to its south are pushing a large ocean swell towards Queensland's southeast
coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Fine and clear over most of the state except for some isolated showers about
the east coast and isolated showers and thunderstorms over the state's
northwest. Fresh to strong SE winds about most of the east coast. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds over the interior and in the tropics. Large swells,
higher than normal tides and beach erosion south of Sandy Cape.
Forecast for Friday
The high is expected to weaken as it passes over New Zealand, but it should
still maintain a ridge of high pressure along the east coast of Queensland.
Winds south of a trough well offshore in the Coral Sea will keep pushing a large
ocean swell towards exposed waters along the southeast coast. Fine and mostly
sunny across the state except for some isolated showers about the southeast and
northeast coast, and some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Large swells, higher than normal tides and beach erosion
south of Sandy Cape. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the
Wide Bay coast and over the Channel Country. A high to very high fire danger
across most of the state, very high to severe over the Channel Country.
Forecast for Saturday
The ridge of high pressure should weaken along Queensland's east coast, but
will nonetheless keep the eastern and central districts fine and mostly sunny
except for some isolated showers about the far northeast. Meanwhile a surface
trough should lie across the state's southwest, and scattered showers and
thunderstorms are expected over the western districts as the air ahead of the
trough gets more humid. The thunderstorm cells will then merge into thundery
rain overnight over the northwest. Thunderstorm activity continuing north along
the west coast of Cape York Peninsula late in the day. Mainly fine over the
southwest though a little patchy light rain should develop during the day. Large
swells, higher than normal tides and beach erosion south of Sandy Cape.
Forecast for Sunday
Very warm to hot and humid over much of the interior ahead of a surface
trough over the state's southwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the
northern tropics, spreading to areas of patchy thundery rain during the day.
Some moderate to heavy falls developing over the southern tropics. Patchy areas
of thundery rain spreading into the central and southeast interior late in the
day. Fine and mostly sunny over the Channel Country and the eastern districts
south of about St. Lawrence. Very warm to hot over the southern interior.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough should remain over the southern interior, and scattered
showers, thunderstorms and areas of thundery rain with some moderate to locally
heavy falls are expected over the northern interior. More isolated showers and
thunderstorms are also expected over the remaining northern districts, the
central interior and over the southeast. Humid and very warm to hot over the
southeast districts.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A trough over the interior should maintain scattered shower and thunderstorm
activity over the northern tropics early in the new week, whilst more isolated
activity is possible over the central interior and the state's southeast.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms may spread into the state's southern
interior later in the week as a surface trough strengthens in the region, whilst
conditions about the central coast and the southeast districts become mainly
fine.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
