Weather Situation
A large high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. The high is expected to weaken and move towards New Zealand
on Friday. An upper level trough occurs off the east coast of Queensland. A weak
surface trough extends across the Coral Sea and should move slowly westwards and
deepen during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Showers about the east coast generally, isolated showers developing inland
over eastern districts during the day. Showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf
coast and the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in the evening. Fine and sunny
over the interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds about most of the east
coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior and in the tropics. A
Very High fire danger over most western districts, and a Severe Fire Danger over
the Channel Country. A high to very high fire danger over eastern districts.
Forecast for Friday
The high over the Tasman Sea moves east and weakens towards New Zealand. A
trough develops over the Coral sea. Strong SE winds easing about the east coast
of Queensland. Isolated showers decreasing about eastern districts and parts of
the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms continuing about the Gulf coast and
the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in the evening. Fine and generally sunny
over the interior, very hot in the west with maximum temperatures reaching 40 to
44C. ESE swell reaching a maximum about the Southeast coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The ridge of higher pressure weakens about the east coast of Queensland. A
new pre frontal trough sweeps across South Australia and enters Victoria. This
trough eventually moves into the Channel country and southern interior then
stalls. A rapid increase in moisture over the northwest region of the state
ahead of this trough will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms
developing. The thunderstorm cells will then merge into thundery rain overnight.
Thunderstorm activity continuing north along the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula late in the day. A little patchy light rain developing over the
Channel Country and spreading east. Fine and generally sunny over the central
interior and eastern Queensland. Isolated coastal showers now confined to the
far northeast tropics. Many locations in the west reaching 43C in the
afternoon.
Forecast for Sunday
The western trough remaining weak over the southwest and southern interior.
Thundery rain over much of the northwest and central interior, tending to patchy
light rain spreading southeast into the Darling Downs. Thunderstorm activity
increasing over Cape York Peninsula north of the thundery rain cloud mass. Some
moderate to heavy falls developing over the southern tropics. Fine and sunny in
the southwest of the state.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Much the same situation for Monday but now isolated showers and thunderstorms
developing into the southeast region as the inland trough creeps into the
Darling Downs district. This thunderstorm activity increases over the southeast
on Tuesday. Elsewhere thundery rain continuing in the southern tropics but
heavier thunderstorms developing towards the central and northeast tropical
coasts. By Wednesday thundery rain has given way to just showers and
thunderstorms over the southern tropics. Showers and thunderstorms persisting
into the Darling Downs and the southeast coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
