MELBOURNE - Dec 10/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters from Bowen to Burnett Heads for this afternoon. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters from Sandy Cape to Point Danger for Wednesday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1030 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies over southwest Queensland and is expected to move west on Tuesday. An upper level trough is moving over eastern Australia. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over western districts and parts of the central interior, with some severe thunderstorms possible over the North West, Channel Country, and western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms along the Gulf of Carpentaria Coast. Scattered showers along the east coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland and southeast interior. Fine and partly cloudy over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate S to SE winds over the Channel Country. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty at times along the east coast and parts of the interior. Fresh to strong SE winds developing along the central coast late in the day. A Very High fire danger over western districts, the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Forecast for Wednesday The high will remain over the southern Tasman Sea, maintaining the firm ridge over the east Queensland coast with fresh to strong SE winds. Scattered showers are expected to continue about most parts of the east coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland. Local thunder is possible over the Southeast Coast due to the upper trough. The upper trough over the Coral Sea is forecast to intensify, and this will deepen a surface trough over the eastern Coral Sea. The inland surface trough is expected to move west of the border, with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected to contract to western districts. Fine over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Thursday The high will move slowly towards New Zealand while slowly weakening. The ridge will therefore weaken slightly, but the surface trough over the Coral Sea will strengthen and maintain fresh to strong winds along the southern coast with an increasing swell. Scattered showers are expected to continue over the Capricornia and southeast Queensland coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland and over the northern coast. The inland surface trough is expected to remain near the western border, with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected in western districts. Fine over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Friday The high will continue moving east past New Zealand weakening the ridge further. The trough over the Coral Sea is expected to move slowly west pushing a drier S'ly airstream over eastern districts resulting in decreasing shower activity. Increasing winds over the southern Coral Sea are also likely to generate larger swells along the southern Queensland coast. The weak surface trough over central Australia may continue to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over the west and about the Gulf Country. Fine over the remainder of the state. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday A weak ridge should persist over eastern districts bringing isolated showers. The trough over the Coral Sea is expected to weaken, decreasing swells along the southern Queensland coast. The weak surface trough over central Australia may move eastwards into western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms likely to continue to its east. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
