Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 8/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country for
today and Sunday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. A surface trough extends through the interior of
Queensland, drifting slowly westwards today before moving towards the east on
Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers, patchy rain and gusty thunderstorms over western
districts; some thunderstorms are severe. Isolated showers, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms over southern and southeast Queensland. Isolated showers
along the northeast tropical coast. Fine though partly cloudy over the remainder
of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh and gusty over the
interior and at times along the east coast. A Severe fire danger in the Channel
Country. A Very High fire danger in the remainder of western districts.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over western districts, as well as
over the southern and central interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over
the southeast districts, tending scattered about the eastern Darling Downs and
far western Southeast Coast. Patchy morning rain areas in the west and south.
Scattered showers about the far northeast coast. Fine though partly cloudy over
the remainder of the state. A warm to hot day over the interior. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds, fresh and gusty over the interior and at times along
the east coast. A Severe to Extreme fire danger in the Channel Country. A Very
High fire danger in the remainder of western districts, central districts and
the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Forecast for Monday
A new high over southern Australia should restrengthen the ridge along the
east coast and cause isolated showers about most of the east coast and adjacent
inland, tending more scattered in the southeast. The surface trough over the
southwest should remain near stationary, and will again allow showers and
thunderstorms to form in a band from the state's northwest, through the central
west and into the southern and southeast interior. Fine over the remainder of
the state. Daytime temperatures remaining above average over the interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move into the southern Tasman and maintain a firm
ridge over the east Queensland coast with scattered showers about the east
coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland. The surface trough over the
southwest is expected to weaken and move out of Queensland, allowing isolated
showers and thunderstorms to continue over the west of the state and across the
southern and southeast interior. Fine over the remainder of the state. Daytime
temperatures remaining a little above average over the west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to move very slowly to the east in the southern Tasman,
maintaining the firm ridge over the east Queensland coast. Scattered showers are
therefore expected about the east coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland.
The surface trough will remain slow moving near the southwest border, but with
the atmosphere stabilising, the showers and thunderstorms will contract to areas
surrounding the Gulf coast. Fine over the remainder of the state. Daytime
temperatures remaining a little above average over the west.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
An onshore wind flow combined with an upper level trough over the Coral Sea
should continue with showers over Queensland's eastern districts. The weak
surface trough is expected to persist near the southwest border of Queensland,
with instability increasing later in the weak and an expansion of showers and
thunderstorms from the Gulf Country to remaining western districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
