MELBOURNE - Dec 3/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for Monday for areas south of a line from Mt. Isa to Winton to Roma and Goondiwindi. A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for Tuesday for most of the state except the far eastern tropics and the far northern districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge of high pressure lies along the east coast of Queensland and is pushing hot to very hot northerly winds across the state ahead of a weak trough over the interior. Forecast for the rest of Monday Scattered showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms over the central, southern and southeast interior districts, spreading to the southeast coast during the evening. Mostly fine over the western districts except for some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the far northwest. Light to moderate SW to NW winds over most of the state, with moderate to fresh NW to NE winds about the east coast. Very High to Severe fire dangers over western districts and the southern interior. Forecast for Tuesday Fine and partly cloudy with very hot over the state's southeast with dry and gusty westerly winds and severe to extreme fire dangers. Fine, partly cloudy and hot to very hot over the remaining eastern districts and the northern districts and central interior, except for some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Wide Bay and Burnett district, the southeast tropics and the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, and some isolated showers about the Torres Strait. Moderate to fresh S to SW winds and daytime temperatures a little below average over the state's southern and western interior. Light to moderate N to NW winds over the eastern districts, fresh and gusty about the southeast. A severe fire danger over most of the state except the far northern districts and the eastern tropics, and an extreme fire danger in the southeast. Forecast for Wednesday The surface trough is expected to contract east off the Fraser Coast into the southern Coral Sea but slope back into the tropics. Isolated shower and thunderstorm activity should therefore contract north into the far northern districts and the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight is expected to move slowly eastwards towards southeastern Australia bringing milder conditions to the western interior, though dry southerly winds will still produce elevated fire dangers over a lot of the state. Forecast for Thursday The high pressure system should move east over southeastern Australia and into the Tasman Sea extending a ridge along the east coast of Queensland, contracting the trough into the northern interior. Fresh SE winds will extend north along the east coast to the tropics, injecting moisture into the southern tropical interior. Isolated showers along the east coast with the focus for thunderstorm activity shifting into the tropics and northern parts of the central interior. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur over remaining parts of the state. Dry air will continue to bring enhanced fire dangers to the western interior districts. Forecast for Friday The high should remain over the Tasman Sea and an associated onshore flow should produce mostly fine conditions over the state's southeast, though some isolated showers are possible about the coast, mainly in the morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected east of the surface trough over the eastern tropics, central interior and far northern districts. Fine and mostly sunny in the southern interior. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The ridge should persist along the east coast, maintaining mainly fine conditions about the eastern districts, though some mainly isolated showers are possible about some of the eastern districts with an onshore wind flow. The surface trough should remain stretched between the northwest and the southeast interior, with some isolated showers and thunderstorms possible near the trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
