Weather Situation
A ridge lies along the Queensland east coast and combined with a slow moving
trough over central and South Australia is bringing N'ly winds and hot to very
hot temperatures over the Queensland interior. An upper level trough is located
off the east Queensland coast and extends a weaker trough over the tropics.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northwest, Gulf Country and
western Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers over the southeast clearing during
the evening. Isolated showers along the east coast north of Townsville, tending
scattered about the North Tropical Coast later tonight. Fine and mostly clear
over the remainder of the state. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds along
the east coast, tending light to moderate NE to NW elsewhere. A Very High Fire
Danger in the Channel Country, Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields
and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Gulf Country and far western Cape
York Peninsula. Isolated showers along the tropical coast and ranges north of
about Townsville, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Fine and
mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. Hot to very hot temperatures
across western and southern Queensland. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds
along the east coast, shifting moderate to fresh and gusty NE to NW winds over
the interior. A Severe Fire Danger in the Channel Country and Central West, and
parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and
Coalfields districts. A Very High Fire Danger in the Northwest, Maranoa and
Warrego, Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The high in the Tasman Sea is expected to move slowly northeastwards towards
the north island of New Zealand while maintaining a weak ridge along the
Queensland east coast. The trough situated across central Australia will slowly
move eastwards and enter far southwest Queensland late in the day. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms will occur over the southwest and about the Gulf of
Carpentaria and adjacent inland areas. Isolated showers will be possible along
the east coast, though mainly north of about Cardwell, tending scattered in the
far north. Fine elsewhere, although some high cloud over the southwest. Hot to
very hot temperatures continuing across western and southern Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will become slow moving near the north island of New Zealand and
should continue to extend a weak ridge along the Queensland east coast. The
trough will continue to slowly move eastwards across western Queensland.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur across western districts and
spread eastwards across southern Queensland into the southeast interior by late
in the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will also occur about the Gulf of
Carpentaria and adjacent inland areas. Isolated showers are possible along the
east coast north of about Gladstone, mainly morning. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. Hot to very hot temperatures continuing across western and southern
Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The high is expected to move slowly to the northeast of New Zealand with the
ridge along the Queensland east coast continuing to weaken. The trough situated
across western Queensland will move slowly across southern Queensland and is
expected to extend isolated showers and thunderstorms into southeast and central
parts of the state, possibly more widespread over the far southeast due to the
passage of an upper trough. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will also occur
about the Gulf of Carpentaria and adjacent inland areas. Isolated showers are
possible along the remaining east coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Hot to
very hot temperatures continuing across western and southern Queensland,
spreading into central and southeast districts.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The surface trough is expected to move into southeast and across central
Queensland on Tuesday, accompanied by isolated showers and thunderstorms and
generally hot to very temperatures. Milder temperatures in the wake of the
trough over southwest Queensland. The trough is then expected to move off the
southeast and central Queensland coasts on Wednesday with isolated showers and
milder S'ly winds expected in these districts though temperatures still trending
a little above average. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue about
the Gulf Country and develop over the eastern tropical interior on Thursday as
the inland trough shifts west again into the central interior of the state.
Isolated showers persisting otherwise about the tropical east coast and ranges.
Remaining hot across the northwest, tropical and central interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
