Weather Situation
A high [1017 hPa] extends a weak ridge along the tropical east coast. Another
high [1022 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight is expected to move
eastwards into the Tasman Sea on Friday, and will extend a firmer ridge along
most of the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies over the Queensland
interior and is expected to remain slow moving during the next couple of days.
An upper level trough is expected to move across Queensland today.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics, tending
scattered in the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers along the northeast
tropical coast. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms over
the remainder of the tropics to the southeast, tending to scattered showers and
gusty thunderstorms over central districts and near the ranges in the southeast.
Fine, hot and sunny over the southwest. Moderate mostly SE to NE winds across
the state. A Very High Fire Danger in the Channel Country, North West, Central
Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego, Capricornia, and Wide Bay and
Burnett.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough is expected to remain over the interior, lying from the
northwest to the southern interior. The upper level trough is expected to move
offshore, however instability will linger across most of northern and eastern
Queensland. As a result, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to
continue over northern and central districts as well as inland parts of the
southeast, tending scattered about the Great Dividing Range. Remaining fine, hot
and mostly sunny over the southwest and southern interior. The high will move
over the Tasman Sea and extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast with
isolated showers. Fine, hot and sunny conditions will continue in the southwest
and southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the Tasman Sea will maintain a weak ridge along the eastern
Queensland coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will extend from the Gulf
Country to the southern and southeastern interior due to a surface trough lying
over the southwest of the state. Isolated showers along the east coast. Hot
conditions will continue over the interior. Fine and very hot in the
southwest.
Forecast for Sunday
The high over the Tasman Sea will become almost stationary and begin to
weaken. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue to extend from the Gulf
Country to the southern and southeastern interior, with isolated showers about
the east coast. Hot conditions will continue over the interior. Continuing fine
and very hot in the southwest.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The coastal ridge of high pressure will be the dominant feature for the
extended outlook period as a new high builds in the southern Tasman Sea.
Isolated showers will continue about the east coast and adjacent inland on
Monday before contracting into the tropics on Tuesday. Hot to very hot
conditions will continue in the west. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the
Gulf Country and western districts will possibly extending to southern and
southeast districts during Wednesday as a weak upper trough moves over the area.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
