MELBOURNE - Nov 15/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego and parts of the North West, Central West and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts for Friday. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters from Noosa Heads to Point Danger, including Moreton Bay. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters from Double Island Point to Noosa Heads for Friday afternoon and evening. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weakening ridge of high pressure extends along the northeast Queensland coast. A trough near the southwestern Queensland border will move east into western Queensland on Friday. Hot, gusty N'ly winds ahead of the trough will result in elevated fire dangers over western and southern districts during Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and western Peninsula coasts. Isolated light showers about the northeast tropical coast north of about Cooktown. Cloud increasing in the far southwest with possible isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms though with little or no rain. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Warm and gusty NE to NW winds over western and southern districts. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the far northern tropics. Mostly light to moderate E to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger over the Northwest, Central West and Channel Country districts. Forecast for Friday Hot, fresh and gusty N'ly winds extending through southern and western Queensland, enhancing fire dangers, particularly through the interior [refer to Fire Weather Warning]. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms developing over far southern parts of the state, possibly reaching the coast near and south of about Brisbane late afternoon or evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the western Gulf Country, also developing about the western Peninsula coast during the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the far northern tropics. Moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere, fresh to strong and gusty at times through western and southern districts. A Very High to Severe fire danger through western districts and the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, reaching Extreme in the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. A Very High fire danger in the Central Highlands and Coalfields and Southeast Coast districts. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough will most likely move further east to extend from the northwest of the state to the southeastern interior. The surface trough is expected to combine with an upper level feature to greatly increase instability through southeastern Queensland, with isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms becoming more widespread on and east of the Great Dividing Range to the coast during the afternoon and evening. A S'ly wind change moving north along the southern coast will increase instability further during the afternoon, with some severe thunderstorms likely. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur over remaining areas northeast of about Mount Isa to St George, possibly reaching the coast south of about Townsville late at night. Fine conditions will occur through the southwest due to a dry, cooler S'ly wind flow behind the trough. Forecast for Sunday The inland trough will shift a little further east to extend from about Mount Isa to Richmond to Emerald, with isolated showers and thunderstorms to its north and east. The coastal trough is expected to contract offshore of the southern coast into the Coral Sea though continue to lean back to the Fraser Island. The associated focus for more widespread shower and thunderstorm activity should therefore shift a little further north out of the far southeast into the Wide Bay and Burnett and Capricornia districts. A much cooler day will occur through far southeastern Queensland with widespread showers and thunderstorms gradually decreasing to isolated showers during the day. Conditions will remain fine and sunny in the west due to a dry S'ly wind flow. Forecast for Monday The inland trough will most likely remain slow moving and extend from the eastern tropical interior into the central interior, with isolated showers and thunderstorms to its east, particularly near the coast and ranges. The coastal trough will most likely remain slow moving near the Wide Bay or Capricorn coast so more widespread shower and thunderstorm activity is expected in these parts. Conditions remain quite unstable through the far southeast though with limited moisture so only isolated showers and possible afternoon storms are expected. Conditions will remain dry and sunny through the west under the dry airmass. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The inland trough should drift further west through the central and southeast interior on Tuesday, with isolated showers and thunderstorms in the moist and unstable airmass to its east. This trough should then merge with a new, more significant trough system entering the southwest of the state on Wednesday and most likely moving east to the southeast coast during Thursday. This trough will generate showers and thunderstorms with its passage. Maximum temperatures will also climb to be well above average in the N'ly wind flow to the east of the trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
