Weather Situation
A surface trough lies over the western Coral Sea onto the tropical east
Queensland coast, with strong and gusty S to SE winds about the coast to its
south. A low [1012 hPa] over the southern Coral Sea is expected to move
northeast and weaken. A slow moving high [1027 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends
a firm ridge along the east coast to the south of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending more
widespread about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
about the western Gulf Country. Fine and mostly sunny over the west. Moderate to
fresh SE to NE winds, tending fresh to strong SE along much of the east coast. A
Very High Fire Danger in the Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Northern Goldfields and
Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to remain over the far northwestern Tasman Sea, with a
firm ridge along the tropical east coast, and fresh to strong SE winds and
isolated showers, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria and about the Gulf
Country. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea region with the ridge
expected to weaken along the east Queensland coast. Partly cloudy with isolated
showers about the North Tropical Coast, possibly scattered between about Cairns
and Ingham in the morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of
Carpentaria and over the western Gulf Country. Instability associated with a
weak upper level trough is likely to lead to isolated afternoon and evening
showers and thunderstorms about the ranges in the far southeast. Fine and mostly
sunny elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
The high is expected to weaken over the eastern Tasman Sea with the ridge
along the tropical east coast also expected to weaken. Partly cloudy with
isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast. Continuing unstable with
isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria and over the
western Gulf Country. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A warm day in the south.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The ridge of high pressure will persist along the north tropical Queensland
coast, although gradually weakening, there is still likely to be isolated light
showers along the North Tropical Coast in the onshore flow. A surface and upper
level trough system is expected to move over the southwest and southern interior
during Friday and into eastern Queensland during the weekend. Showers and
thunderstorms are likely to accompany the trough over southern Queensland as it
moves eastwards, reaching southeast and central districts by Saturday and
persisting during the weekend. Maximum temperatures are expected to be above
average in the south.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
