web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weakening high over New Zealand extends a ridge onto the Queensland east
coast. A trough occurs over the interior and is expected to drift further east
tomorrow, eventually reaching the southeast region on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over western districts, scattered
showers and thunderstorms over the Gulf and central interior. Fine and mostly
sunny over the eastern interior. Isolated showers about the east coast. Moderate
to fresh E to SE winds in the northern tropics tending to light to moderate E to
NE winds about most of the east coast. Light to moderate N to NE winds over the
eastern interior, light to moderate S to SE winds in the west. A high fire
danger over the eastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
Patchy rain with isolated thunderstorms over most of the interior, extending
SE into the Darling Downs district with moderate falls. Thunderstorms generally
about the Gulf region and the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Fine further
east, isolated showers about the east coast. Showers extending over the SE
region during Friday morning. Becoming fine and sunny in the far west. Moderate
to fresh E to SE winds through the tropics, light to moderate NE winds about
most of the east coast. Light to moderate S to SE winds over the interior. A
very high fire danger in the far west.
Forecast for Saturday
Rain areas and local thunder over the SE region with moderate to heavy falls
as the inland trough moves through with freshening SE winds about the coast.
Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms generally through the eastern interior
over the central Highlands. Showers and thunderstorms further north towards the
Gulf district. Isolated showers continuing in the NE tropics. Dry and sunny
over the west and through southern districts. Daytime temperatures will again be
well below average under the cloud band and also in the S to SE wind flow in its
wake.
Forecast for Sunday
Patchy rain clearing the east coast early, isolated showers in the afternoon
over eastern districts, extending into the tropics. Showers generally about the
NE tropical coast. The instability now decreases over Queensland as the upper
level trough clears the east coast. This will reduce the thunderstorm activity
to isolated cells about the Gulf coast. Dry and sunny over most of the interior.
Strong SE winds about the SE coast and extending north to St Lawrence. Minimum
and maximum temperatures will generally remain below average in the cool S to SE
flow.
Forecast for Monday
Showers decreasing about the east coast south of Mackay, scattered showers on
the NE tropical coast. Dry and sunny over most of the interior. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms about the Gulf coast. Strong winds easing about southern
waters but developing north of Bowen.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
After the trough passage on the east coast a ridge of higher pressure will
follow and persist into Thursday. Showers will continue to contract north
through Wednesday and Thursday. Remaining dry over the interior and fine over
the SE region. Minimum temperatures will remain slightly below average whilst
maximum temperatures should slowly recover closer to average.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
