Weather Situation
A high [1018 hPa] over the eastern Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along
Queensland's east coast. A cold front is moving eastwards through far
southwestern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northwest. Fine over the
remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most areas. A
moderate to fresh S to SW change developing over the southern interior. A very
high fire danger over the state's southwest, easing in the evening.
Forecast for Friday
Fine and mostly sunny conditions over most of the state. Isolated showers
developing along the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Yeppoon, with
isolated thunderstorms possible about the Wide Bay in the afternoon. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms also developing over the northwest. Light to moderate
SW to SE winds over southern Queensland, fresh at times near the southeast
coast, tending light and variable over the southern tropics and moderate SE over
the far north. A very high fire danger over the Darling Downs, Central West,
Channel Country and the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The cold front and southerly change should progress northwards to the Central
Coast, while an inland trough will develop about the central highlands. A ridge
will develop along the southern Queensland coast, driving a more humid airmass
westwards towards inland trough. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected
in this more humid air over the southeast tropical coast, the Central Highlands
and the northern parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district. Isolated light
showers are also possible further south along the coast and adjacent inland, and
showers and thunderstorms are again expected to develop over the Gulf Country.
Fine and mostly sunny across the remainder of the state. Very warm to hot over
the western half of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough should weaken over the Central Coast, but the firm ridge
along the east coast will still maintain a flow of humid air and at least
isolated showers across the southeast tropical coast, tending scattered with
isolated thunderstorms with the assistance of the inland trough over the Central
Highlands. Isolated showers are also likely to develop over the southeastern
inland with the assistance of a weak upper trough. Fine and mostly sunny across
the remainder of the state, except for some isolated showers and thunderstorms
about the western Gulf Country.
Forecast for Monday
The firm ridge will remain in place along the east coast, but aloft upper
level troughing will be replaced by an upper ridge over central inland
Queensland, leading to increasing stability over the east. In response, shower
activity will become more isolated and confined to near the east coast, while
activity over the northwest will also diminish to just a few showers. An upper
level trough and cold front will move eastwards towards the western border of
Queensland, with freshening northerly flow leading to very hot conditions over
the far southwest. Some high cloud will also spill into the far west, but no
significant rainfall is expected.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A new ridge should remain in place along the east coast early in the new
week, directing more humid air and isolated showers across the northeast coast.
Meanwhile the upper trough and cold front will move into the west of the state,
producing at least isolated showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland,
which may increase and spread to patchy rain areas during the outlook period. A
persistent onshore flow and an offshore upper level trough may also allow
showers to gradually become more frequent about the state's southeast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
