MELBOURNE - Oct 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country district for today. A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego and parts of the Northwest, Central West and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts for Friday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1018 hpa] over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A low pressure system south of New Caledonia is moving eastwards. A cold front over the Channel Country is expected to move over the northwest, central and southern interior on Friday. An upper level trough is expected to move over New South Wales and into central Australia during Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Fine over most of the state. Isolated showers about eastern and northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the western Gulf Country and Northwest district. Powerful surf along the east coast south from Sandy Cape, gradually easing during the evening. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds, tending moderate NE to NW over the interior ahead of a fresh and gusty S to SE change moving over the Channel Country. A Severe Fire Danger in the Channel Country district. Forecast for Friday Cloudy over the southwest but with little or no rain. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northwest and western Gulf Country in the afternoon and evening. A very warm to hot day in western, central and southern Queensland. Isolated showers over far northern Cape York Peninsula. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds elsewhere ahead of a fresh and gusty SW to SE change spreading across western and southern Queensland. A Severe Fire Danger in the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego and parts of the Northwest, Central West and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. A Very High Fire Danger in the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett, Capricornia, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders forecast districts. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough will linger over central Australia, while the surface trough will move eastwards and off the southeast coast. High cloud with patchy light rain and isolated thunderstorms is likely to spread across most of western and southern Queensland, reaching the southeast in the afternoon and evening. Little rainfall is expected to reach the surface over inland parts due to the dry lower atmosphere. However, the combination of a more humid airmass and the surface trough moving over southeast Queensland may produce more significant showers and thunderstorms during the day in this area. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible over the Gulf Country ahead of the surface trough. Remaining fine and mostly sunny over the northeast tropics. Daytime temperatures will remain above average over the east, but will fall to below average over the southwest due to the southerly wind flow. Forecast for Sunday A high pressure system is expected to move across southeast Australia and over the Tasman Sea in the evening. The high is expected to extend a ridge over far southeast Queensland with cloudy and cooler conditions and scattered showers, at least. A surface trough is likely to deepen and shift westwards into the central and southern interior and this combined with an amplifying upper trough over the west is expected to generate showers and thunderstorms to its east over the remainder of southeast Queensland and central districts, possibly spreading to rain areas in the evening. There is the possibility of at least moderate falls over central districts. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over far western Queensland in the drier conditions west of the surface trough. Forecast for Monday The upper trough is likely to move slowly eastwards over western Queensland, while the deep surface trough is likely to lie over the central interior and possibly more a little further west into the Channel Country. The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to extend a ridge over the east Queensland coast, feeding in moisture into the surface trough over the interior. The combination of the troughs and high moisture is likely to lead to further showers, rain areas and thunderstorms in the unstable conditions over the southern interior, central and southeast districts and possibly extending into the eastern Channel Country. There is currently some uncertainty about the strength and position of the upper level and surface troughs, which will affect the extent of the more widespread or heavier rainfalls. Isolated showers or thunderstorms are likely over the northeast tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over northwest Queensland. Temperatures generally below average in central and southern districts due to cloud. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The upper trough is likely to move slowly eastwards during Tuesday before moving off the east coast on Wednesday. The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and extend a ridge over most of the east Queensland coast. As a result, showers, rain areas and thunderstorms are likely to continue in the unstable conditions over the southern interior, central and southeast districts before contracting east and easing to isolated showers during Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated showers over the northeast tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over western Queensland in the drier conditions with maximum temperatures increasing to above average. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
