Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country
district.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1018 hpa] over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. A low pressure system south of New Caledonia is
pushing a large ocean swell towards southern Queensland, gradually easing late
today. A cold front is expected to move eastwards over the Channel Country
today.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Fine over most of the state. Isolated showers about the north tropical coast
and northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
western Gulf Country. Powerful surf along the east coast south from Sandy Cape,
gradually easing during the afternoon and evening. Mostly moderate SE to NE
winds, tending moderate to fresh and gusty NE to NW over the west ahead of a
fresh and gusty S to SE change moving over the Channel Country. A Severe Fire
Danger in the Channel Country district. A Very High Fire Danger in the
Capricornia, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Northwest, Central West and
Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Friday
An upper level trough over central Australia will produce some high cloud
over the far southwest, spreading eastwards over the southern interior during
the day, but little if any rainfall is expected. The cold front will move
further eastwards into the central and southeastern interior, allowing
temperatures to ease over the southwest Channel Country, while at the same time
producing isolated afternoon showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two about
the Northwest district. Isolated light showers near Torres Strait. Very warm to
hot temperatures over most of western, central and southeast Queensland with an
elevated fire danger expected.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper level trough will linger over central Australia, while the surface
trough will move eastwards and off the southeast coast. High cloud with patchy
light rain and isolated thunderstorms is likely to spread across most of western
and southern Queensland, reaching the southeast in the afternoon and evening.
Little rainfall is expected to reach the surface over inland parts due to the
dry lower atmosphere. However, the combination of a more humid airmass and the
surface trough near the Southeast Coast may produce more significant showers and
thunderstorms during the day in this area. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
are also possible over the Gulf Country ahead of the surface trough. Remaining
fine and mostly sunny over the northeast tropics. Daytime temperatures will
remain above average over the east, but will fall to below average over the
southwest due to the southerly wind flow.
Forecast for Sunday
A high pressure system is expected to move across southeast Australia and
over the Tasman Sea in the evening. The high is expected to extend a ridge over
far southeast Queensland with cloudy and cooler conditions and scattered
showers. A surface trough is likely to deepen and shift westwards into the
central and southern interior and this combined with an amplifying upper trough
over the west is expected to generate showers and thunderstorms to its east over
the remainder of southeast Queensland and central districts, possibly spreading
to rain areas in the evening. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over
the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over western Queensland in the drier
conditions west of the surface trough.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The upper trough is likely to move slowly eastwards during Monday and Tuesday
before moving off the east coast by Wednesday. The high over the Tasman Sea is
expected to extend a ridge over the east Queensland coast, feeding in moisture
into the surface trough over the interior. As a result, showers, rain areas and
thunderstorms are likely to continue in the unstable conditions over the
southern interior, central and southeast districts before contracting east and
easing to isolated showers on Wednesday. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms over the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over western
Queensland in the drier conditions west of the surface trough, with maximum
temperatures increasing to above average.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
