Weather Situation
A weakening ridge lies along the tropical east coast of Queensland. A trough
extended from a developing low over the central Tasman Sea to the northern New
South Wales coast and was moving north towards southeast Queensland. A high
[1027 hPa] near Tasmania is expected to push a cooler, gusty southerly change
through southern districts in the following the passage of the trough overnight.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers developing near the southeast coast during the evening.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula.
Fine elsewhere. Strong and gusty S to SE winds developing along the southeast
coast during the late afternoon and evening; elsewhere, light to moderate SW to
S winds in the south, tending SE to E in the tropics. A Very High fire danger
across most of the state inland from the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
Isolated showers along the east coast south of about Cardwell. Scattered
showers over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
Milder daytime temperatures across southern and parts of central Queensland.
Strong S to SE winds extending along the coast south of about Cardwell by the
evening. Mostly moderate SE to E winds elsewhere. A severe fire danger in the
Central Highlands and Coalfields, Channel Country and southwest parts of the
Maranoa and Warrego districts; a very high fire danger across most of the
remainder of the state inland from the east coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should move slowly to the east across the Tasman Sea, while the
trough will move further north onto the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers
along exposed parts of the east coast, tending more scattered about the North
Tropical Coast in the morning. Isolated showers over the northern Peninsula.
Fine and mostly sunny over the interior. A deep low over the Tasman Sea should
move further away from the Queensland coast, but will extend large swells along
most of Queensland's east coast. Very warm daytime temperatures over the far
west.
Forecast for Thursday
The high should weaken over the Tasman Sea, and the low should move further
away from Australia, allowing swell to ease along Queensland's east coast. A
relatively dry onshore flow should allow fine conditions to return to the east
coast south of about Cardwell, with just isolated showers further north. Fine
and mostly sunny over the interior. A new high over the Great Australian Bight
should push a surface trough into the Channel Country late in the day, but no
precipitation is expected with it.
Forecast for Friday
An upper level trough over central Australia will produce some high cloud
over the far southwest, spreading eastwards over the southern interior during
the day, but little if any rainfall is expected. The surface trough will move
further eastwards into the central interior, however the airmass will remain too
dry for any shower or thunderstorm activity. The ridge along the east coast will
weaken, with showers clearing from the east coast.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
the upper level trough and associated surface trough will move eastwards and
off the east coast during the weekend. Some patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms are possible with the passage of these systems, however no
significant rainfall is expected at this time. Following this, a new ridge will
develop along the east coast producing a few showers along the coast, and mainly
fine conditions inland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
