Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 19/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for parts of the Channel
Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Double Island
Point and Point Danger on Saturday.

Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the Queensland
east coast. The high will gradually move eastwards over the next couple of days
and weaken the ridge along the Queensland east coast by Sunday. A surface trough
situated over South Australia and western New South Wales is moving in an
eastwards direction and is expected to move across southern Queensland during
Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated thunderstorms across southern and parts of southeast and central
Queensland, though little or no rainfall is expected to reach the surface.
Isolated showers across far northern Queensland, tending scattered along the
east coast between Lockhart River and Cairns. Fine and mostly clear over the
remainder of the state. Generally moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the
east coast. Moderate NE to NW winds, fresh at times, elsewhere. Severe fire
danger in parts of the Channel Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper
Flinders districts. Very high fire danger in the Northwest, Central West and
Central Highlands and Coalfields districts.
Forecast for Saturday
Possible isolated thunderstorms across the southern interior, though little
or no rainfall is expected to reach the surface. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms will also be possible across southeast and parts of central
Queensland, as well as western parts of the Gulf Country district. Isolated
showers will occur across far northern Queensland, possibly tending scattered
during the morning between about Lockhart River and Cape Melville. Fine and
mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. Generally moderate to fresh SE to
NE winds along the east coast. Moderate NE to NW winds, fresh at times,
elsewhere, ahead of a SE to SW wind change moving over the southern interior
during the day. Hot daytime temperatures across southern and western Queensland.
Severe fire danger in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders district. Very
high fire danger in the Gulf Country, Northwest, Central West, Central Highlands
and Coalfields, Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite
Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to move eastwards and weaken the
ridge along the Queensland east coast. The surface trough over southern
Queensland will become slow moving, though it should gradually move into the
southeast of the state during the day. Patchy light rain and possible isolated
thunderstorms across the southern interior, though little or no rainfall is
expected to reach the surface. Isolated afternoon or evening showers and
thunderstorms across southeast and parts of central Queensland. Isolated showers
should occur along the tropical east coast north of about Cairns. Fine and
mostly sunny elsewhere. Hot daytime temperatures across southern and western
Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
Another, stronger, surface trough will move up the New South Wales coast
during the day and move into southeast Queensland in the afternoon or evening.
Another high will move across southeastern Australia and begin to build a ridge
along the southern Queensland coast in the wake of the trough. Early patchy
light rain may occur over southern, southeast and parts of central Queensland.
Isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms across southeast and
parts of central Queensland. Isolated showers across far northern Queensland,
tending scattered along the tropical east coast north of about Cape Melville.
Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Hot daytime temperatures across southern,
western and parts of central Queensland. Strong S to SE winds will develop along
the east coast, south of about Hervey Bay, in the late afternoon and
evening.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough will continue to move northwards along the central
Queensland coast, though should move offshore into the Coral Sea during the
morning. The high over southeastern Australia will move eastwards into the
Tasman Sea and will begin to build a firm ridge along the Queensland east coast.
Isolated showers along much of the east coast, tending scattered north of about
Cape Melville. Isolated afternoon showers may occur about remaining parts of the
Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Cooler daytime temperatures
across southern and parts of central Queensland. Strong S to SE winds will
develop along the east coast, south of about Townsville, by the evening. An
increasing S'ly swell is expected to develop over far southern waters by the
evening.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high in the Tasman Sea will become slow moving on Wednesday and will
weaken into Friday. Another surface trough moving eastwards over central
Australia will move across western Queensland by Thursday and should move into
southeast and central parts of the state by Friday. Isolated showers along the
east coast should gradually contract northwards by Friday. Isolated
thunderstorms will become possible across western and southern Queensland. The
swell over far southern waters will persist into Wednesday, though should begin
to ease on Thursday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
