Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east tropical
coast of Queensland. The high will weaken as it moves eastwards, while another
high will push through southeastern Australia during Thursday and into the
Tasman Sea. A trough is located over the southern areas of the state. A dry and
stable airmass is in place over the Queensland interior.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers along the east coast north of about Cardwell. Fine and
mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, fresh and
gusty in parts. Generally light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, with a
light to moderate SE to SW wind change moving over parts of the southern
interior during the day. Very high fire dangers in the Northern Goldfields and
Upper Flinders, Northwest, Central West, Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego
and Southeast Coast districts.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated showers along the east coast north of about Cardwell. Isolated
afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms possible over southeast
Queensland, mostly over the higher terrain. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere,
with warm daytime temperatures across the southwest and southern interior of the
state. Moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, fresh and gusty in parts.
Generally light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, with a light to moderate
SE to SW wind change moving over parts of the southern interior during the day.
Very high fire dangers in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Channel
Country, Central Highlands and Coalfields, and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.
Forecast for Friday
The high over the Tasman Sea will move slowly east and maintain a ridge along
the Queensland east coast. Isolated high based thunderstorms are possible over
the southern interior, though little or no rainfall is expected to reach the
surface with this activity. Isolated showers along the tropical east coast north
of about Cardwell. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Warm to hot daytime
temperatures are expected across southwest and southern Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The high in the Tasman Sea will move slowly east and maintain the ridge along
the Queensland east coast. A surface trough will move eastwards across South
Australia and western New South Wales, and reach into southern Queensland during
the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible across southeast
Queensland during the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers along the tropical
east coast north of about Cardwell. Warm to hot daytime temperatures in southern
and western Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Tasman Sea will weaken as it moves east of New Zealand,
weakening the ridge along the Queensland coast. The surface trough will move
slowly to the northeast, reaching the southeast interior during the afternoon.
Instability will increase as an upper trough moves into southern inland
Queensland, with isolated showers and thunderstorms across southeast parts of
the state during the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers along the tropical
east coast north of about Cardwell. Warm to hot daytime temperatures in southern
and western Queensland.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The surface trough will move eastwards and off the southeast coast Monday and
reaching the central coast on Tuesday. A deep low will become established in the
Tasman Sea from Monday. Showers and thunderstorms are possible across southern,
southeast and central Queensland on Monday. Isolated showers will continue along
parts of the tropical east coast. Warm daytime temperatures are expected across
western, southern and parts of central Queensland, though a short-lived cooler
change should push into the southern interior on Monday and extend into the
southeast of the state on Tuesday.
